Manny Pacquiao: Boxing Champ Facing Criminal Tax Charges

Jun 7, 2018

The tax man has a beef with superstar boxer Manny Pacquiao.

According to a report from The ABS-CBN Corporation, tax officials in the Philippines have filed a criminal complaint against Pac-Man. They allege that he failed to submit documents to investigators who were looking into his tax returns, despite the fact they issued three notices and a subpoena.

Local prosecutors will now look to put a case together to bring Pac-Man to court. If convicted, he could spend up to two years in jail, according to the report.

In the summer of 2011, it was reported by FoxSports.com that Pac-Man's net worth was just $26 million, a relatively low number given the dollar signs that tend to surround his fights. For example, up until his bout against Shane Mosley last May, Pac-Man's fights had generated nearly $400 million in revenue.

The problem Pac-Man is facing now, according to Bureau of Internal Revenue regional director Rozil Lozares, is the fact that there were discrepancies in his 2010 tax return, ones related to his assorted business ventures and endorsements.

Pac-Man serves as a congressman in the Philippines, and he has also dabbled in music and acting, among other things.

Pacquiao is scheduled to fight Timothy Bradley in early June. This week, word has come out from GMA News that Pac-Man is interested in doing a bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in which the winner would take 70 percent of the pay-per-view revenue.

Pac-Man's fights typically earn well over one million pay-per-view buys, per BoxingScene.com. A bout against Mayweather could potentially generate millions of pay-per-view buys.
