NBA Trade Scenarios: Predicting Which Superstars Will Be Moved at Deadline
With more than 10 NBA stars heavily rumored to be on the move, it’s time to predict where they’ll wind up.
Rajon Rondo is the talk of the league after his recent and spectacular triple-double, yet he’s been dogged by trade rumors for nearly two seasons.
The Boston Celtics are running out of time to figure out whether they’re rebuilding or contending. If rebuilding, keep Rondo and start parting out the Big Three for assets and prospects.
If contending, then Boston can sell high on Rondo right now, bringing back multiple pieces and picks that can help them address their roster today.
Dwight Howard wants to be liked and maintain his good-guy legacy, and ownership sounds determined to ride this era out to the bitter end.
With Brook Lopez hurt for the New Jersey Nets again, there suddenly aren’t a lot of trade options for the Orlando Magic anyway.
It’s in everybody’s best interests for Dwight to stay put, see who Orlando puts around him by March 15 and then leave his offseason options open.
After difficult circumstances clouding his Utah Jazz exit, Deron Williams would be foolish to force his way out of New Jersey.
If Dwight Howard isn’t coming now, Williams could be swapped for Rondo. However, he’ll also probably wait for the offseason to shake out before he considers bolting.
The Phoenix Suns and Steve Nash say nothing is changing, but neither is their chance to win. With the right assets and a third team, adding Nash to the desperate Orlando Magic as another expiring contract makes sense for all parties in this season and beyond.
Kobe Bryant has consistently stuck up for Pau Gasol throughout his rumored demise. It’s telling how little Kobe has said in Andrew Bynum’s defense through similar circumstances.
However, the Los Angeles Lakers appear tentatively conservative heading into the deadline. If the right deal is there, Bynum could be moved, but I think he stays.
If the Lakers fail again this postseason, then that team is getting blown up.
Monta Ellis is the most likely guy to get moved before the trade deadline. He wants to go, and the Golden State Warriors are ready to part with him.
The Minnesota Timberwolves and Portland Trail Blazers could make tons of sense, but it’s even more logical if Golden State is the third team in the Steve Nash-to-Orlando deal.
That way, the Suns retain a star, Orlando gets some help (but on a contract that can expire with Howard’s if need be) and Golden State gets a nice cache of depth.
Even if more than half of these stars really do stay put, March 15 is quickly shaping up to be a whirlwind migration of big names.
