B/R MMA Official Women's P4P Rankings for March
The ladies of MMA will no longer be ignored.
"Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey" represented a resurgence of women's MMA in the form of a dramatic championship main event and a preliminary bout that should be an early candidate for fight of the year.
With Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos and Gina Carano out of the picture, Ronda Rousey came out of nowhere to claim the Strikeforce bantamweight title from Miesha Tate and begin her reign as the face of women's MMA.
Former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson promised his bout with K.J. Noons would prove he was more deserving of the main-event attention, but the only thing Thomson and Noons proved was their co-main event slot should've been given to Sarah Kaufman and Alexis Davis.
Both women put on a memorable bout that should trump Carano's fight with Julie Kedzie as the Forrest Griffin versus Stephan Bonnar of women's MMA.
Some continue to snub their noses at the ladies, but for fans of women's MMA, there is plenty to be excited about in the near future.
Without further ado, here are Bleacher Report's official women's MMA pound-for-pound rankings.
These rankings are the combined efforts of some of Bleacher Report's best MMA writers, as we continue to try and provide you with the best content on the web.
10) Rosi Sexton
1 of 10Promotion: Cage Warriors
Record: 12-2
Most Recent Fight: Defeated Roxanne Modafferi at Cage Warriors 40
Next Scheduled Fight: Aisling Daly
Previous Ranking: N/A
Since losing to Zoila Gurgel at Bellator 23, Rosi Sexton has picked up two straight victories, including a win over former Strikeforce bantamweight title contender Roxanne Modafferi.
She was set to challenge Sheila Gaff on July 9 for the vacant Cage Warriors women's super flyweight title, but a concussion sustained in training forced her to pull out of the fight.
After over a year-long hiatus, Sexton will return in May to face Aisling Daly in the first round of Cage Warriors' women's super flyweight championship tournament.
9) Alexis Davis
2 of 10Promotion: Strikeforce
Record: 11-5
Most Recent Fight: Loss to Sarah Kaufman at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey
Next Scheduled Fight: N/A
Previous Ranking: N/A
Alexis Davis' face looked like it had been put through a meat grinder at "Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey," but she has to feel it was worth it after a jubilant response from fans all over the world.
She went tooth and nail with former Strikeforce bantamweight champion Sarah Kaufman.
Despite coming out on the losing end of a unanimous decision, Davis certainly made a name for herself in a division starving for stars.
8) Jessica Aguilar
3 of 10Promotion: N/A
Record: 13-4
Most Recent Fight: Defeated Patricia Vidonic
Next Scheduled Fight: N/A
Previous Ranking: N/A
Along with Megumi Fujii, Jessica Aguilar is another fighter fans feel was a victim of poor judging in a split-decision loss to Zoila Gurgel.
Since the loss, Aguilar has picked up four straight wins, and she continues to gain steam en route to a possible showdown with Fujii.
To this day, Aguilar still believes that both she and Fujii defeated Gurgel.
7) Tara LaRosa
4 of 10Promotion: N/A
Record: 20-2
Most Recent Fight: Defeated Carina Damm at Shark Fights 14
Next Scheduled Fight: N/A
Previous Ranking: N/A
Tara LaRosa is appreciated as a legend in women's MMA. It's unfortunate she hasn't garnered the same mainstream notoriety as her peers.
With nearly a decade of professional experience, it seems that only hardcore fans recognize LaRosa as a world-class talent. She is coming off a submission win over Carina Damm at Shark Fights 14.
6) Marloes Coenen
5 of 10Promotion: Invicta Fighting Championships
Record: 19-5
Most Recent Fight: Loss to Miesha Tate at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson
Next Scheduled Fight: Romy Ruyssen
Previous Ranking: N/A
Apparently, Marloes Coenen was in the wrong gym at the wrong time.
After losing the Strikeforce bantamweight title to Miesha Tate in July, Coenen was released from the promotion due to a rift between Golden Glory and UFC President Dana White.
Everything seems to be at ease now, and some fighters that were released have been given new contracts.
Will Strikeforce come knocking on Coenen's door?
Regardless, the former champ just signed with Invicta Fighting Championships.
She's expected to make her promotional debut on April 28 against Romy Ruyssen.
5) Sarah Kaufman
6 of 10Promotion: Strikeforce
Record: 15-1
Most Recent Fight: Defeated Alexis Davis at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey
Next Scheduled Fight: Ronda Rousey
Previous Ranking: N/A
Ronda Rousey may have defeated Miesha Tate for the Strikeforce title, but truthfully, Sarah Kaufman was the rightful No. 1 contender.
She already holds a victory over Tate, who she lit up on the feet in May 2009.
At "Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey," Kaufman stole the show along with opponent Alexis Davis in a three-round standup battle full of back-and-forth action.
Now Kaufman will likely move on to challenge Rousey for the bantamweight title.
She should provide a stiff test for the "Rowdy" one, seeing as she has strong hips and the best boxing in the division.
4) Zoila Gurgel
7 of 10Promotion: Bellator
Record: 11-1
Most Recent Fight: Defeated Karina Hallinan at Bellator 35
Next Scheduled Fight: N/A
Previous Ranking: N/A
Lady Luck is on Zoila Gurgel's side. In the Bellator Season 3 women's 115-pound tournament, Gurgel walked away with a couple of questionable split-decision wins over Megumi Fujii and Jessica Aguilar.
Regardless of personal opinion, Gurgel earned the nods of the judges, and the win over Fujii helped her soar up the pound-for-pound ranks.
At Bellator 35, she continued her winning ways by taking a unanimous decision over Karina Hallinan in a non-title bout.
Gurgel is currently rehabbing a torn ACL injury sustained in October 2011.
3) Miesha Tate
8 of 10Promotion: Strikeforce
Record: 12-3
Most Recent Fight: Loss to Ronda Rouse at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey
Next Scheduled Fight: N/A
Previous Ranking: N/A
Unfortunately for "Takedown" fans, Miesha Tate was the only one being taken down in her March 3 Strikeforce title bout with Ronda Rousey.
Tate showed tremendous heart in her first-round armbar submission loss to the Olympic Judo bronze medalist.
Luckily, Tate's heart didn't cost her an arm. X-rays revealed that her arm wasn't broken despite the grotesque contortion act Rousey put her through.
2) Megumi Fujii
9 of 10Promotion: N/A
Record: 25-1
Most Recent Fight: Defeated Karla Benitez at Fight for Japan: Genki Desu Ka Omisoka 2011
Next Scheduled Fight: N/A
Previous Ranking: N/A
Many consider Megumi Fujii the Fedor Emelianenko of women's MMA.
Before losing a highly contested split decision to Zoila Gurgel at Bellator 34, Fujii had maintained an undefeated professional record of 22-0.
The loss to Gurgel left a smudge on Fujii's perfect record and a bad taste in the mouths of many fans.
Since the loss, Fujii has rebounded with three straight wins over Emi Fujino, Mika Nagano and Karla Benitez.
1) Ronda Rousey
10 of 10Promotion: Strikeforce
Record: 5-0
Most Recent Fight: Defeated Miesha Tate at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey
Next Scheduled Fight: Sarah Kaufman
Previous Ranking: N/A
Ronda Rousey proved she wasn't all talk at "Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey," where she submitted Miesha Tate to claim the Strikeforce women's bantamweight title.
Despite being criticized for her blunt personality and uncaring attitude, Rousey could be the savior of women's MMA.
In just a few months, she managed to put the ladies back into the mainstream spotlight using only the power of words.
