Andre-Villas Boas Sacked by Chelsea FC: 3 Potential Managers to Replace Him

Bimersha GautamMar 4, 2012

It has been reported by Chelsea's official website that manager Andre Villas-Boas has been sacked:

"

The board would like to record our gratitude for his work and express our disappointment that the relationship has ended so early.

Unfortunately the results and performances of the team have not been good enough and were showing no signs of improving at a key time in the season.

"

Roberto Di Matteo has been named the interim manager for the remainder of the season.

He is one of a multitude of managers who have arrived at Chelsea after Roman Abramovich's arrival, and though I have always been critical of the Russian on his stance on his managerial policies, the sacking couldn't have come sooner.

The sheer ineptitude of the Portuguese manager leaves me flabbergasted.

What follows are three potential managers to eventually take over the reins of Chelsea.

3. Jose Mourinho

Who better to bring glory back to Chelsea than the man who started it all?

He is not the most liked figure in Madrid, and he may look to pave his way back to Chelsea.

Recently, he was also in London, albeit incognito. Most people associated this visit with the England job, but at this point, that's just speculation.

It would be a fairytale return if Jose came back and established Chelsea as a strong contender in England and Europe.

2. Guus Hiddink

If there is one manager that can turn fortunes around for almost any club and country he manages, it is certainly Guus Hiddink.

Having recently managed the Turkish national team, Hiddink comes with a wealth of experience and a fantastic track record.

He has managed the Netherlands, South Korea, Australia and Russia with great levels of success

Currently, Hiddink is now managing Anzhi Makhachkala, but an opportunity to manage Chelsea might be too tempting, and it might be the perfect time for him to take control of the squad.

1. Rafael Benitez

3 of 3

The Daily Mail has already reported that Rafael Benitez will fill the managerial position at Chelsea.

Benitez is a proven manager of a world-class mold who could be an exceptional replacement for Villas-Boas.

He won the La Liga twice, a UEFA Cup with Valencia and a UEFA Champions League with Liverpool.

Furthermore, he guided Liverpool to another Champions League final in 2007.

Although the later years at Liverpool were marred by inconsistent performances, and he made a dismal showing as manager of Inter Milan, Benitez might be the best replacement and could perform astutely as a caretaker manager.

However, after the season, someone of Pep Guardiola's caliber might be brought in.
