2013 NBA Slam Dunk Contest: $1 Million Prize Interests Blake Griffin

Kristian WinfieldMar 4, 2012

Following yet another dull NBA Slam Dunk Contest, Commissioner David Stern contemplated removing the competition from future All-Star Weekends (ala NFL commish' Roger Goodell and the Pro Bowl).

This year, the participants were all non-noteworthy, with Utah's Jeremy Evans taking home the prize over Indiana's Paul George, Houston's Chase Budinger and Minnesota's rookie Derrick Williams.

The highlight of the night? A glow-in-the-dark 360-degree windmill by Paul George, which only corralled a 17 on the new, useless "dunk intensity meter."

No more judges, just purely fan voting.

There's only one cure to the Slam Dunk Contest, and that's star power.

While LeBron James has dropped hints here and there about potentially hopping into a dunk contest, he has yet to do so.

But when CBS Sports' Royce Young presented the King with an opportunity to take home $1 million for winning the dunk contest, James quickly changed his stance, saying, "Then I'd reconsider, wouldn't you?"

It seems as though the South Beach superstar isn't the only one who would hop into a dunk contest should a prize incentive be put out there.

2011 Slam Dunk Champion Blake Griffin declined this year's invitation to defend his title, saying he needed the time off to rest and see his family.

However, when presented with the same incentive as King James, a $1 million prize, Griffin also reconsidered.

"I'm not opposed to doing it again," Griffin told Sports Illustrated's Sam Amick. "But [the $1 million] makes it a little bit more competitive."

With James and Griffin lined up, the 2013 Slam Dunk Contest, should there be a cash incentive, already has a star-studded lineup. There's no doubt that such an award would entice N.Y. Knicks' high-flyer J.R. Smith and even Washington Wizards PG John Wall to enter their names into the contest.

A lineup of James, Griffin, Smith and Wall would fill All-Star Weekend with jaw-dropping, mind-boggling monster jams, thus bringing energy and life back to the Slam Dunk Contest.

Do you think the NBA should provide an award (possibly to a charitable organization) for the winner of future Slam Dunk Contests?

Oh, and bring back the judges!
