Floyd Mayweather-Miguel Cotto Fight Features Alvarez vs. Mosley in Undercard
The highly-hyped welterweight championship fight between WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather and WBA super welterweight champion Miguel Cotto is getting more exciting with the official announcement of the inclusion of Canelo Alvarez and Shane Mosley in their May 5 fight undercard.
Discounting the possibility of a ring encounter between Mayweather and Pacquiao late this year, the scheduled May 5 event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas could be this year's biggest boxing event.
In the main event, unbeaten Mayweather will try to keep his unblemished record as he tangles with WBA welterweight king Cotto, while the main supporting event will feature rising young Mexican boxing sensation Canelo Alvarez and former Pacquiao and Mayweather foe Sugar Shane Mosley.
Mayweather, who is prison-bound for domestic violence charges stemming from his assault on his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris in September 2010, is favored to win over the Puerto Rican star. However, future foe Pacquiao said Mayweather will have a tough fight with Cotto, who is on a three-fight winning streak since losing to Pacquiao in 2010.
Pacquiao, who is facing Tijmothy Bradley on June 9 after failing to agree on Mayweather's fight proposal which includes the purse splits and timing of the fight, said Cotto is no easy opponent for Mayweather.
"He thought Cotto is an easy opponent," Pacquiao told Philstar.com.
Pacquiao also said Mayweather is in danger of losing to Cotto. "Cotto is a hard-hitter," Pacquiao added. "Mayweather has everything to lose against Cotto. If Floyd loses here, he loses all his credibility.”
In an interview during the press tour to promote the upcoming fight, Mayweather's trainer and uncle Roger Mayweather said,
"I think my nephew has too much skill for him. It's going to be a good fight for a while, but I think in the end my nephew will stop him. I don't know what round he will do it, but I think that he will stop him because he has got too much boxing ability for him. He knows what he has to do when he gets in there.
"
Mayweather, who snatched Victor Ortiz' WBC welterweight crown after a controversial victory, is gunning for his 43rd win without a single loss since he turned professional in 1996.
Meanwhile, Mexican boxing sensation Canelo Alvarez is looking forward to face the winner of the Mayweather vs. Cotto fight as he is confident of getting past the aging Mosley on May 5.
"I would want to fight either one. They are two of the best," said Alvarez,
As Alvarez exudes confidence of winning over Mosley, the 40-year-old multi-division champion said, "I'm fighting a good guy who is young and I care about his career, but I also care about my career. I'm at 100 percent and that's unfortunate for Canelo."
The May 5 blockbuster is expected to surpass the highest pay-per-view sales for any boxing event in the last three years, including the latest PPV numbers for the Pacquiao vs. Marquez trilogy fight.
