28 Days of WrestleMania: Things We Need to See to Make This the Best PPV Ever
Disclaimer: This will be an ongoing series for the next 28 days leading up to the biggest event in sports entertainment, WrestleMania 28. The idea behind the piece is to build more moment for the event and give you, the Bleacher Report fan, a chance to read, comment and weigh in with opinions about the WWE, the business and the event. It is my hope this becomes something positive and we all enjoy the ride for the next four weeks to Miami and the biggest event of the wrestling year. Enjoy.
We wait for it, plunk down our $49.95 and hope we are charmed, excited and left wanting more. And in some cases, we find that the wrestling pay-per-view events are some of the best drama we have seen in some time.
In other cases, well, we hope we can get our money back. Obviously, we can't. But with WrestleMania, we want it to be everything we hoped it would be and more. We want glitz, glamour, surprises and of course, title changes. We want Hogan and Andre. We want Steamboat and Savage. And of course, we want Rock and Austin.
This year is a curious case of excitement tempered with a bit of anxiety. A match planned a year in the making, a match that is a continuation from last year and a match that should bring a world title home to Scotland.
You cannot ask for much more in the WWE. But actually, you can.
Here are some things we need to see to make this the best PPV ever.
Sheamus Needs to Beat Daniel Bryan
1 of 9While Bryan is a great opportunist and is actually pretty good in this role for Smackdown, having Sheamus win (which, if he doesn't, opens a whole new can of crap) is the right thing to do.
Bryan could continue to feud with Sheamus after losing the title (he will get a title rematch), but Sheamus may have bigger and better fish to fry.
I see Sheamus feuding with Cody Rhodes for the World Title and possibly having Rhodes "finally" getting the gold he deserves.
Kharma Needs to Make an Appearance
2 of 9There has been a rumor that Trish Stratus wants to face Beth Phoenix, which would be amazing for the Divas in the WWE.
But Stratus is not a long-term solution for the division. Wrestlers like Phoenix, Natalya, Tamina and Kharma are the future of this division.
Whoever faces Phoenix needs to beas shocked as the Glamazon when Kharma makes her appearance. And, while it is assumed that Phoenix will win again. I cannot see Kharma taking a swipe at Tamina, but this is the Divas, and well, cat fights get more ratings.
Cody Rhodes Needs to Take Down a Giant
3 of 9Rhodes has never looked better, and that spells trouble for Big Show.
While it seems the Intercontinental Champion has been stuck in a holding pattern of late, he has improved his game and shown he can handle the likes of Big Show, Dolph Ziggler, Wade Barrett and others.
While losing the Intercontinental Belt is not such a bad thing for Rhodes, it could be a godsend for Big Show because it keeps him viable and important.
Losing a stagnant title also means he can concentrate on winning the world title.
Vince McMahon Needs to Get Involved in Laurinaitis vs. Long
4 of 9Yes, the Daddy Mac himself needs to show up in South Beach and throw some of his weight around.
While there is speculation about big changes on the horizon (thank goodness), I do not like this subplot and feel it has no real place in the PPV.
If all the components are already in place before April 1, please leave it out. If there is still conflict (and you know there will be), then settle it through the top of the food chain.
The Rock Needs to Lose to John Cena
5 of 9He is right when he says he is constantly there night after night and week after week. After this PPV, Dwayne Johnson goes back to making movies. Cena has to find another dance partner (Dolph Ziggler), and there needs to be some closure somehow.
Could there be closure like the match between The Rock and Hogan when the two faced off, The Rock won and there was a handshake at the end?
Yes, it's cheesy, but it could work wonders. Sometimes, going back to the past only makes the future brighter.
Chris Jericho Must Beat CM Punk
6 of 9This does a few things for the Raw brand.
Jericho needs to be a bigger part of the brand, bringing in ratings and helping a feud that could exceed expectations hang around for a while.
It means an angry Punk gains more fan support. And a mad Punk is better than a "champion" Punk. It also means someone like a Miz or John Cena gets back in the title picture.
Jericho is not who he used to be, but he is still better than 75 percent of the Raw roster right now.
Stone Cold Makes an Appearance
7 of 9Hell yeah!
While there is no host this year, there is always a place for Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Miami is like Hollywood south, and Steve Austin is country at its best.
And he could pimp himself for future appearances on Raw.
Shawn Michaels Has Some Involvement in the Event
8 of 9Mr. WrestleMania needs to interject himself somehow.
If he damages the match between Undertaker and HHH, then it soils the buildup.
If he gets under the skin of his best friend, the rivalry is reborn.
And it only gets hotter from there.
Undertaker Must Win and Retire on Top
9 of 9Age, injuries and the waiting game.
I think this match becomes the greatest of its kind with two great superstars. But HHH cannot beat the Dead Man. It goes against everything that is right with the streak. 20-0 seems so right for all the right reasons.
But because he may not wrestle again for months or even another year, he needs the win and the chance to walk away on his own terms in a blaze of glory.
