Klitschko vs. Mormeck: Main-Event Prediction and Undercard Bouts to Watch
When defending WBA (Super), WBO, IBF, IBO & The Ring Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko squares off with veteran journeyman Jean-Marc Mormeck, the boxing world will again wonder why a better fight wasn’t made.
It’s because the Klitschkos don’t want to lose.
Fans can’t blame the brother duo for lining up opponents that they feel they can beat. It’s been done that way for years in boxing, hence the steady decline in support for the sport.
One aspect of this match we can’t underestimate is just how talented Wladimir Klitschko really is. With an amazing jab and vicious power, Klitschko has the ring experience to pick apart even the most seasoned veteran. Say what they will about his opponent selection, but there is no tougher heavyweight fighter on earth besides his own brother.
As far as Mormeck is concerned, the 39-year-old slugger has power in his hand but lacks the elite speed to keep himself out of the reach of Klitschko’s long arms. Since it’s boxing, I’ll never be the one to say a fighter has no chance, but if Mormeck doesn’t get on the inside just like Dereck Chisora got inside on Vitali, he will be knocked out within five rounds.
Main-Event Prediction: Klitschko via TKO in the fifth round
Undercard Bouts
Ola Afolabi (18-2-3, 8 KO) vs. Valery Brudov (39-3, 28 KO) for the interim WBO Cruiserweight Title
While many fans feel that this bout should be a walk in the park for the younger Ola Afolabi, I could very easily see Brudov shocking the world and taking the vacant title. Despite Burdov’s lack of success in title fights, Afolabi’s inexperience may be a factor. I’m taking Brudov by decision.
Alexander Ustinov (25-0, 19 KO) vs. Kertson Manswell (22-4, 17 KO)
The undefeated Ustinov will put his record on the line against journeyman Kertson Manswell, who is looking to make a statement with his third win in four fights after three straight losses. While this will be a solid fight, I don’t see Ustinov losing.
Laszlo Toth (8-0-1, 6 KO) vs. Stefan Worth (12-2-1, 3 KO)
In a battle of prospects, Toth is the focus of the bout and the favorite. I have not seen these men fight live, so I will have to ride the bandwagon and take the undefeated fighter.
Tony Harrison (4-0, 4 KO) vs. Harun Akcabelen (10-4-1, 7 KO)
See Toth vs. Worth, but I’ll take Harrison for the same reasons.
