Liverpool Transfer Rumors: The Biggest Recent Anfield Rumors
Could Liverpool be experiencing a renaissance?
With their dramatic Carling Cup Final victory over Cardiff City last weekend, it is entirely possible. Like many were saying about Arsenal last year, one trophy could open the floodgates to many more in the future.
The Reds are definitely a rebuilding side on the mend, with flaws appearing in each new iteration of the team as soon as Kenny Dalglish changes his strategy.
Even though Liverpool have spent a great deal of money to bring in the talent necessary to get them back to the promised land of the Champions League, there is still room for improvement, should John Henry open his checkbook again.
Arrivals are harbingers of departures, and thus here are the top recent Liverpool transfer rumors in either direction.
Luis Suarez to PSG
1 of 7Ever since Luis Suarez's infamous race row with Patrice Evra, rumors have abounded that he is on his way out of the club to create public relations disasters for other sides.
Most recently, Suarez has been linked to nouveau-riche Paris Saint-Germain, who have been on a spending spree since being taken over by oil money last season.
Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly keen to take the troubled but immensely talented striker on board, and he would have no trouble paying any fee that Liverpool might demand.
However, Suarez is the lifeblood of his team's attack, and there has been no sign of Liverpool's owners distancing themselves from their No. 7.
Marek Hamsik
2 of 7If there is one thing that Liverpool have shown in the transfer market, it is that they are not afraid to spend to strengthen the midfield, even when it appears that there is ample cover in the center of the pitch.
Thus, rumors that the Reds are tracking supremely talented Napoli play-maker Marek Hamsik are not completely ludicrous.
Hamsik is an experienced Slovakian international who has played a pivotal role in Napoli's domestic and European success this campaign. The fact that he has shone so brightly in a squad overflowing with attacking talent speaks volumes about his ability.
However, if Liverpool are forced into a bidding war with Real Madrid for the player's services, as the report suggests, there is little chance of the Merseysiders pursuing the deal any further than its current cursory stage.
Seydou Keita
3 of 7Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita has been linked with a move to Anfield more than any other player recently, as he is rumored to want more playing time than he is currently receiving at Barcelona.
It is easy to get overshadowed when you are forced to compete for playing time with perhaps the best midfield quartet of this generation, but the 32-year-old Keita is nevertheless a quality player.
For Keita to play football "week in, week out," he would be well-served to pack his bags for Liverpool than to watch the heroics of Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas and Sergio Busquets.
He may not have the impact of Steven Gerrard, but Keita can certainly add depth and class to Liverpool's midfield.
Javi Martinez
4 of 7Javi Martinez has starred this season for Athletic Bilbao after winning the U-21 championship last summer with the Spanish national team.
Martinez would be a great fit for Liverpool, as he would add youth and stability to their midfield, potentially forming a very solid partnership with the currently injured Lucas Leiva.
He has been linked to the Reds as part of a larger summer spending spree, but this is one of the most intelligent, valuable moves that the club could make.
Iker Muniain
5 of 7This is certainly a "golden generation" of Spanish football. There are so many outstanding footballers emerging right now in the Iberian peninsula that some get crowded out, and Iker Muniain is among that group.
Yet there can be no doubt that the player has tremendous quality and is worth the look that both Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly giving him.
Muniain is quick, tricky, and can be an asset either in attacking midfield or on the wing, in a variant of the flowing, free Luis Suarez role.
At only 19 years old, Muniain is already a senior international for arguably the best national team in the world (and possibly one of the best ever). A move to a huge side like Liverpool will only expedite his development.
Shinji Kagawa
6 of 7Shinji Kagawa has been an integral part of Borussia Dortmund's dynamic, exciting squad that is storming through the Bundesliga, and all this productivity has reportedly caught Liverpool's attention.
Even though in that report, Kagawa mentions that he does not believe a move away from the German champions is in his future, those types of statements have been made by players innumerable times before, only for the player to leave during one of the next transfer windows.
Any transfer fee for Kagawa would likely be in excess of £20 million, as he is a very talented and young midfielder who also has the versatility to operate on the wing.
Dortmund will probably not be sellers, but one never knows in football.
Nobody
7 of 7The rabid speculation and conjuring of Liverpool transfer rumors has been tempered somewhat in recent days by Director of Football Damien Comolli's announcement that the club's summer activity will be "nothing like what we've done before."
It is an understandable statement. While there are areas that of the squad that could use reinforcement, the Reds have a pretty good team with a mixture of youth and experience that just proved good enough to break a suffocating trophy drought.
As Comolli mentions, though, Liverpool have the luxury of being assured of European competition relatively early in the season, which may attract the caliber of player that the club might seek to purchase this summer.
Fortunately for Liverpool, the club only needs to assemble the final pieces of a contending club, rather than establish the base.
