NBA Trade Rumors: Phoenix Suns Would Be Foolish Not to Deal PG Steve Nash

Eric BowmanMar 3, 2012

Steve Nash is a free agent at the end of this year, and if the Phoenix Suns do not move him before the March 15 NBA trade deadline, they should easily win worst organization of the year.

At the age of 38, Nash has yet to win a championship in his long career, and that means the chances of him hanging around Phoenix next year are incredibly low. The Sun aren't contenders, which is why they have to trade him away before the deadline.

Alex Kennedy of Hoops World reported that Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic wants Nash. The Magic are pursuing him, but so far nothing has come of it.

If the Suns have any ounce of intelligence, they'll dump the aging point guard because they'll get good value in return. Letting Nash walk in free agency would be the most ridiculous move ever, as the Suns would be left with nothing.

While Nash says he wants to remain on the Suns this season, ultimately it isn't his decision. Phoenix is playing the nice-guy role right now, and the Suns should know that they're going to get burned.

Nash is comfortable in Phoenix, but realistically he has to know that he isn't going to win big with the Suns.

Suns owner Robert Sarver told The Arizona Republic that he thinks the odds of Nash returning with Phoenix after this season are good.

"

I think those odds are probably pretty good," Sarver said. "I think he likes the organization. His family lives here. He's had tremendous success with the organization. He's still playing well. Listen, he's a free agent (after the season) and has the ability to look around. But I wouldn't rule him out continuing here."

"

Let's be real here; there is no way Nash should even consider re-signing with the Suns. He would be throwing his career away. Choosing a contender is his best bet, therefore Phoenix must trade him so it gets something for his services.

Sure, Nash may like it in Phoenix, but winning needs to be his top priority. He's getting up there in age, so his days in the league are likely numbered. Joining a legitimate championship-caliber team is what needs to be done.

It absolutely baffles me that the Suns care so much right now. Business is business, and Phoenix has to get better if they ever want to be taken serious in the Western Conference. The best way to do that is by acquiring more talent or solid draft picks in return for Nash.

Just because the Suns like Nash doesn't mean they need to ruin the future of their franchise. Phoenix has a great opportunity to get quality players in exchange for Nash, but here the Suns sit, believing he'll come back to them.

If Nash does indeed return to the Suns after this year, there are only two logical reasons for it happening. The first would be that Phoenix paid him a lot of money and he no longer cares about winning, and the other would be that he is just downright insane.

The Suns aren't going to be winning big anytime soon, so expect Nash to look elsewhere at the end of the season. Phoenix would be unbelievably foolish to just let Nash walk without trading him for something good in return.
