Arsenal Transfer: 9 Gunners Who Must Be Sold in the Summer

Allan JiangJun 7, 2018

With the probable signing of Lukas Podolski in the summer, Arsenal not only need to buy more top quality players, but Arsène Wenger needs to clear out the deadwood.

By deadwood I mean the players who either don't want to be a Gunner or are of no value to Arsenal.

Here are nine Gunners that must be sold in the summer.

Andrey Arshavin

1 of 9

Current Status: On Loan at Zenit St. Petersburg

Even though Andrey Arshavin had a woeful season for Arsenal, he provided three assists in his last five games.

Given the boos he received against Manchester United, you would have thought the Arsenal supporters were watching Kaba Diawara spurn another gilt-edged opportunity.

Arshavin’s career at Arsenal could have been so much better if Arsène Wenger played the Russian centrally.

Do svidaniya, Arshavin.

Carlos Vela

2 of 9

Current Status: On Loan at Real Sociedad

Carlos Vela has outshone the highly rated Frenchman Antoine Griezmann this season.

If there is one career mistake Vela has made, it was staying at Arsenal because he’s proving his worth at Real Sociedad with some splendid performances.

For example, in a 2-0 win over Sevilla, Vela scored a goal, provided an assist and hit the post.

The Sun reported him saying: “I don't want to return to Arsenal. I have asked my agent to negotiate with Arsenal to stay here.”

Instead of asking for money, Arsenal should play hardball and ask for Griezmann in exchange.

Denílson

3 of 9

Current Status: On Loan at São Paulo

Denílson had a solid 2008-09 season, but after that, he regressed drastically to the point where he was almost scared of playing a diagonal pass.

Here is his injury record since 2010: two groin strains, a hamstring strain, a toe injury and a thigh strain.

When he returned to São Paulo, he accumulated three red cards in the span of eight games—John Hartson would be proud.

Johan Djourou

4 of 9

Current Status: Defensive Liability

Johan Djourou is the new Pascal Cygan.

Djourou's positional sense is diabolical, his tackling is nonexistent and he has low football IQ.

The main issue with Djourou's ineptitude is his attitude of not wanting to play at right-back.

Łukasz Fabiański

5 of 9

Current Status: Counting Down The Days Till His Contract Expires

Łukasz Fabiański has been humbled by the rise of Wojciech Szczęsny.

At Legia Warsaw, Szczęsny looked up to Fabiański, but now it's the other way around.

A series of bumbling performances eradicated Fabiański's confidence and belief in himself. In a way, it's similar to Tomasz Kuszczak's swift fall from grace.

A new club may invigorate Fabiański's career.

Manuel Almunia

6 of 9

Current Status: Learning The Art of Goalkeeping (And Swag For That Matter) From Wojciech Szczęsny

Manuel Almunia had no business being Arsenal's No. 1 because he was always a squad-filler.

Arsenal should make Damián Martínez the No. 2 goalkeeper, promote an English academy goalkeeper to No. 3 and sell Almunia.

Why keep Almunia when he is useless?

Marouane Chamakh

7 of 9

Current Status: Has Gone 10 Games And Counting Without a Goal

Marouane Chamakh has only scored one goal from 708 minutes of play. It took Thierry Henry 163 minutes to score three goals.

Chamakh was good in his first season and could have been a serviceable forward this season.

Instead, he offers nothing when he comes off the bench because he plays with no heart, no passion and no determination.

Nicklas Bendtner

8 of 9

Current Status: On Loan at Sunderland

A groin strain and a broken nose have interrupted Nicklas Bendtner's season at Sunderland.

It started promisingly with two goals and four assists in his first six games. He hasn't scored since a headed goal against Queens Park Rangers in December.

People have criticised Bendtner's inflated ego, but he has the talent to validate such cockiness. Unfortunately, he does not consistently produce the goods.

Here's what former teammate Håvard Nordtveit thought about Bendtner :

"

He has his own way of doing things, but he could have made more of an effort in training when he was at Arsenal. It was disappointing for Bendtner to have so little time on the field in the last half year. But Arsene Wenger always wants to play with his best players and that’s what he did.

"

Sébastien Squillaci

9 of 9

Current Status: Boosting His Ego by Watching Highlights of Igors Stepanovs

Sébastien Squillaci earns £60,000 a week to do basically nothing.

He was terrible in a 3-1 loss to Olympiacos, cost Arsenal the game against Fulham and didn't do anything of note in a 2-0 loss to Sunderland.
