WrestleMania 28: Power Ranking Announced Matches for Wrestling's Biggest Event

Mike ChiariMar 2, 2012

Heading into Friday's edition of SmackDown, four matches have been announced for WrestleMania 28, and the show is shaping up to be one of the best in recent memory. After last year's event flopped on most levels, there is no question that a huge effort is needed on April 1 in Miami.

Even if the remainder of the card is filled with garbage, it will be extremely difficult for WrestleMania 28 to disappoint. Both world title matches look to be extremely good, while the other two main-event-level matches could be the two biggest non-title matches of all time on wrestling's grandest stage.

Here is a power ranking of the four matches that have been announced in terms of projected match quality and overall impact.

4. Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan

While Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan for the World Heavyweight Championship may be listed as the "worst" of the four matches on this list, it is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. The buildup hasn't been great, with so much focus being put on the other matches, but the feud should get plenty of time to heat up in the coming weeks on SmackDown.

Both wrestlers have a lot of great qualities and contrasting personalities, which make this match intriguing. Sheamus may be a face, but he still has a mean streak and is willing to fight anyone. His mic skills are highly underrated, and for a man his size, he is great in the ring. Bryan is more of a cowardly heel, but he plays the role well. His promo work has been much better as of late too, and it could be argued that he's the best worker in the company.

On top of all that, there is plenty of unpredictability involved in this match. While the creative team could choose to give Sheamus his WrestleMania moment by having the Royal Rumble winner take the title, they could also legitimize Bryan with a win. Whatever the case, this figures to be a highly diverse and entertaining match that rounds out the card beautifully.

3. The Rock vs. John Cena

This may be the most-hyped match on the card, but The Rock vs. John Cena won't likely be the best. The match has been a year in the making, so it's certainly highly anticipated, but it may not measure up from a wrestling standpoint. The Rock hasn't had a singles match in over seven years, while Cena was never the best worker to begin with, so it will be interesting to see if the wrestling can match the overall hype.

Regardless of your expectations for the match itself, though, it's very difficult not to be excited. With The Rock scheduled to appear on every Raw between now and WrestleMania, the build will continue to ramp up more and more. Most seem to think that Cena got the better of Rock this past week (even if it was scripted that way), so the buildup may be even more entertaining than the match itself.

It's very clear that the WWE has been trying to get Cena over in recent weeks, and it seems to be working. They won't be able to split the WrestleMania crowd since the match is in The Rock's hometown of Miami, but a good portion of the fanbase seems to have spurned Rock in favor of Cena. If nothing else, the atmosphere is sure to be incredible for the main-event match.

2. Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk

In a battle for the title of "best in the world," CM Punk will defend his WWE Championship against Chris Jericho. In terms of pure match quality, this bout has the potential to be one of the best ever. Punk is unquestionably one of the best workers in the company currently, while Jericho has put on a number of great 'Mania matches in the past and is one of the best wrestlers ever.

On top of that, the war of words has begun to get very interesting. Punk and Jericho delivered a firecracker of a promo on Monday and have succeeded in making it seem like they have legitimate heat between them with regards to who is truly the best in the world. Everything about this feud has been done the way wrestling feuds are supposed to be done to this point.

There is plenty of unpredictability involved with this match as well. The overwhelming sentiment is that Punk will be allowed to shine on the big stage and claim the title of best in the world, but it isn't that cut and dry. Punk has gotten the better of Jericho at nearly every turn during this rivalry, so it wouldn't be a shock for Jericho to find a way to pick up the win and hold the title—for a short time at least.

1. Triple H vs. The Undertaker

When it was announced a couple of weeks ago that Triple H and The Undertaker would face off at WrestleMania for the second consecutive year, there were plenty of wrestling fans who were less than pleased. After all, this will be the third time overall that the two legends have met at the Super Bowl of wrestling, but if the feud is compelling and the match is great, then why should it matter.

There is no question that the buildup for this match has been better than any other thus far. The writers have done a fantastic job of using Undertaker's near loss last year to create doubt about whether he can still compete at the highest level. Also, the involvement of Shawn Michaels has been great, and it figures to get even better.

The match between Hunter and Taker last year was excellent, as both men gave it everything they had, and that promises to be true again this year. The added stipulation of Hell in a Cell was a great call as well, since it is one of Taker's signature matches. There is a decent chance that this could be Undertaker's last ever match, so it is something all wrestling fans should appreciate and behold.
