Klitschko vs Mormeck: Absurd Mismatch a Step Back for Klitschko

Jun 7, 2018

The Klitschko brothers have done more than enough to prove they are the two most dominant heavyweight boxers on the planet, but the two of them insist on continuing to prove the point.

A couple weeks ago, we saw Vitali Klitschko score a unanimous decision victory against Dereck Chisora, and we later found out that he had fought the bulk of the fight with one good arm. If he'd had two good arms, my assumption is he would have beaten Chisora to the point where he would have been unable to get into a brawl with David Haye after the fight was over.

That would have saved everyone a whole lot of trouble.

Oh well. It's Wladimir Klitschko's turn to step into the spotlight this weekend. He'll put his million or so titles on the line against Jean-Marc Mormeck in Germany on Saturday.

Mormeck will not win. He has no chance. This fight is basically already over.

Mormeck is overmatched against Klitschko for a couple reasons. Above all, he's overmatched because Wladimir Klitschko is Wladimir Klitschko. The only legitimate threat to his heavyweight throne is his brother, and the two of them are not about to fight one another.

Mormeck is also overmatched because Klitschko towers over him. Mormeck isn't even 6-feet tall. Klitschko is roughly 6'6", and he has a significant reach advantage against Mormeck. It helps that he's also four years younger than Mormeck, who is pushing 40.

To boot, Mormeck has already dabbled in retirement, taking a two-year break from boxing before returning in 2009. Since his comeback, he's had three heavyweight fights and hasn't looked particularly good in any one of them.

So let's go ahead and chalk this one up as another win for Klitschko. He'll soon have 57 of them, including 15 straight.

Beating Mormeck will prove nothing. In fact, even bothering to fight him proves nothing of any significance. All it proves is that Klitschko is a man with a job to do, and that it doesn't matter if you like how he's doing it.

That's fine, but he should know that he's better than this. This bout will allow him to pad his record and pocket a few bucks, but that's about it. Because he's the top heavyweight fighter in the world, he should care about things like actual competition and entertainment value.

It's understandable that tough competition is hard to come by for Klitschko, but he can surely do better than Mormeck. He can also do better in terms of making an entertaining fight that people actually want to see.

His bout against David Haye is a perfect example. That bout carried intrigue in part because Haye looked the part of a tough opponent, and because he didn't mind talking the talk. The fight itself was awful, but at least the buildup was fun.

Klitschko's bout against Mormeck will be awful, and there doesn't seem to be any buildup to it at all. The fact that the world's top heavyweight can't generate significant buzz for his next fight is pretty alarming.

I view this fight as a symbol of everything that is wrong with the Klitschko brothers' reign over the heavyweight division. Their reign is a boring one, and that's thanks in large part to how boring the two of them are.

And now here's Wladimir preparing to take part in a fight that is sure to be boring.

The heavyweight division didn't use to be like this.
