2012 NFL Mock Draft: Which Teams Are Bound to Make Wrong Moves?

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

Making the right first-round draft pick can really help an NFL team go from worst to first in the span of just one season. However, making the wrong draft choice can set a struggling team back even further than before.

This is why teams do so much scouting on these players, because it's so important that they have all the information needed so the right player is taken.

Let's look at at which teams are bound to make the wrong moves in this complete first-round mock draft.

1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

The Indianapolis Colts cannot afford to pass up on Andrew Luck, or they will forever regret it. He has the talent to be a franchise player for more than a decade.

2. St. Louis Rams: Matt Kalil, OT, USC

If the Rams don't trade this pick, then expect them to select the best left tackle in this draft class, which is Matt Kalil of USC.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Since they already have a fine young quarterback in Christian Ponder, the Minnesota Vikings will address another position of need in wide wide receiver by taking Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State.

4. Cleveland Browns: Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

The Browns are desperate for a franchise quarterback, which means they won't pass on selecting Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III out of Baylor.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers secondary must improve if they want to return to the playoffs, which means they will select the best cornerback available in Morris Claiborne from LSU.

However, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense this season was pretty bad thanks to the 30th-ranked running game in the NFL.

Tampa Bay should take Trent Richardson with this pick, but I cannot imagine them taking Richardson when the team has other needs like wide receiver.

The Buccaneers are sure to fail with the No. 5 overall pick.

6. Washington Redskins: Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

The Redskins won't trade up to take Robert Griffin III, and instead, will rebuild their offensive line with sturdy right tackle Riley Reiff from Iowa.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

Since they lack a big-play wide receiver, the easy pick here for the Jacksonville Jaguars is selecting star wideout Michael Floyd of Notre Dame.

8. Miami Dolphins: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

Trent Richardson will be the best player available here when the Miami Dolphins pick, and they cannot allow a potential Pro-Bowl caliber running back to slip past them, even if RB is not an area of need for the Dolphins.

The Miami Dolphins need an offensive playmaker with Brandon Marshall being so inconsistent and Reggie Bush failing to be an every-down back.

Richardson is a tremendous player, but he doesn't address an area of concern for Miami. The Dolphins might look to trade up for a quarterback also, which would be a terrible move since Matt Moore is a capable starting quarterback.

Either way, the Dolphins are bound to make the wrong selection.

9. Carolina Panthers: Devon Still, DT, Penn State

The Panthers must address their need for a run-stuffing defensive tackle, which means Devon Still of Penn State will be their choice in a smart pick at No. 9.

10. Buffalo Bills: Courtney Upshaw, DE, Alabama

The Bills pass-rush was not good enough toward the end of the season, so Buffalo will select a talented player with big-game experience from Alabama in Courtney Upshaw.

11. Kansas City Chiefs: Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College

Adding a smart, talented linebacker in Luke Kuechly of Boston College would improve the Kansas City Chiefs defense in both pass and run defense.

12. Seattle Seahawks: Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois

If the Seahawks can improve their pass-rush they will contend for the NFC West title. Whitney Mercilus is a speedy pass-rusher who would thrive in the Seahawks defense.

13. Arizona Cardinals: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

The Arizona Cardinals will address some offensive line issues by selecting left tackle Jonathan Martin of Stanford. Martin is too talented to pass on at pick No. 13.

14. Dallas Cowboys: Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

The Cowboys defense must defend the pass much better if they are to become a championship-caliber team. Taking the second best cornerback in this draft class in Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick is a no-brainer for Dallas.

15. Philadelphia Eagles: Zach Brown, LB, North Carolina

The Eagles defense let them down last season, in part due to the poor play from their linebackers. Philadelphia will address this concern by taking Zach Brown from North Carolina.

16. New York Jets: Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina

The Jets defense needs an athletic pass-rusher to dominate the AFC East, and taking Melvin Ingram of South Carolina will certainly give them a future star at defensive end.

17. Cincinnati Bengals: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

The Cincinnati Bengals will not pass on the potential of Quinton Coples to become an elite pass-rusher at pick No. 17. With Coples, the improved Bengals defense will be spectacular next season.

18. San Diego Chargers: David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

The biggest challenge for the Chargers is finding a future star offensive lineman, and Stanford's David DeCastro has all the makings of an elite NFL guard.

19. Chicago Bears: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

The Bears won't get back to the Super Bowl unless they improve at wide receiver, which makes the selection of Mohamed Sanu from Rutgers an easy choice for Chicago.

20. Tennessee Titans: Andre Branch, DE, Clemson

As the Tennessee Titans continue to rebuild their defense, they need to find a defensive end that can come in and contribute right away. Andre Branch of Clemson will be a quality pass-rusher from day one in the NFL.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

The Cincinnati Bengals will finally find a suitable replacement for former star cornerback Jonathan Joseph by selecting Nebraska defensive back Alfonzo Dennard.

22. Cleveland Browns: Chris Polk, RB, Washington

The Cleveland Browns will take a running back with their second first-round pick if they take a quarterback with the fourth-overall selection. If they take a running back, expect Chris Polk of the Washington Huskies to be the pick because he's very NFL-ready.

23. Detroit Lions: Mark Barron, S, Alabama

The Lions defense must improve in the secondary, and Alabama safety Mark Barron has the potential to be a star defensive back at the NFL level.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

The Steelers defense thrives off the pressure their defensive line puts on the quarterback, which is why talented defensive tackle Dontari Poe is a perfect fit for Pittsburgh.

25. Denver Broncos: Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

The Broncos don't seem willing to declare Tim Tebow their quarterback of the future, so they might think about drafting a pocket passer in Ryan Tannehill from Texas A&M to compete with Tebow for the starting job.

26. Houston Texans: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

With Andre Johnson suffering through injury last season, giving quarterback Matt Schaub another quality target to throw to would be a wise move. Kendall Wright of Baylor is a speedy wideout who can come into the Texans offense and thrive.

Wright is a phenomenal player, but the Texans should take a linebacker with the future of Mario Williams uncertain. If the Texans don't re-sign Williams to a massive long-term contract, then they must take a defensive player in the first round.

However, injuries to some important offensive players last season may make the Texans think about adding some offensive depth in the first round, which would be a bad move.

27. New England Patriots: Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

Dan Koppen is not the Pro-Bowl caliber center he used to be, so the New England Patriots will certainly look at Peter Konz of Wisconsin as someone who can dominate for years. Bill Belichick does a fantastic job of drafting offensive linemen.

28. Green Bay Packers: Jared Crick, DE, Nebraska

The Green Bay Packers pass defense was so bad last season that their pass-rush must improve to help their secondary. Jared Crick of Nebraska will be able to come into the NFL right away and be effective for Green Bay.

29. Baltimore Ravens: Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State

The Ravens need to find a young linebacker capable of being a star player, and Vontaze Burfict of Arizona State could be that player. He needs someone who can mentor him in the NFL, and Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis might be the best person to help him.

Burfict has some maturity issues, however, and if the Ravens don't do their homework on Burfict, then selecting him could prove to be a costly move an important draft for the team. They cannot afford to mess up on defensive picks when their defense is aging in several areas.

30. San Francisco 49ers: Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

The 49ers defense is spectacular, but their offense could still use an upgrade at the playmaking positions. Stephen Hill of Georgia Tech could be a spectacular fit in the 49ers offense with quarterback Alex Smith, thanks to his speed and catching ability.

31. New York Giants: Fletcher Cox, DT, Miss State

The New York Giants defensive line is so good, but it could still use some more depth. Fletcher Cox of Mississipi State could really help the run defense of the Giants if the team selects him in the late first round.

32. New England Patriots: Michael Brockers, DE, LSU

The Patriots will not let LSU defensive end Michael Brockers slip into the second round because New England needs a talented pass rusher to help take some pressure off of star defensive tackle Vince Wilfork.
