Klitschko vs. Mormeck: What Mormeck Must Do to Pull off Massive Upset

Tim DanielsJun 5, 2018

Jean-Marc Mormeck is a huge underdog heading into his fight on Saturday against Wladimir Klitschko, but “The Marksman” has only lost four times in his career, so he's got a puncher's chance. As long as he believes in himself, the wily veteran could pull off a major upset.

Here are three things Mormeck must do to have any chance of shocking the boxing world.

Be Aggressive

The most common error boxers make when going up against an elite opponent like Klitschko is fighting not to lose. Instead of attacking like they would in any other bout, they sit back and hope the favorite doesn't pummel them.

Mormeck has picked up 22 knockouts in his career and should be aiming for No. 23. All three of his opponent's losses have come via TKO. So if he goes the distance, the chances of picking up the victory become even smaller than they already are.

It's important Mormeck comes out on the attack quickly. He needs to fight like he has nothing to lose from the opening bell, which he really doesn't.

Stay Low

Height will be the most obvious difference between the two men during the fight. Mormeck checks in just shy of six feet, so Klitschko will tower over him at 6'6''. Even though it's a disadvantage, it's not impossible to overcome.

He'll need to focus on staying low and attacking the body of Klitschko in the early rounds to wear him down. Force the champion to work for every strike. If he tries to fight on the same level, he's going to get knocked out quickly.

Instead of trying to play Klitschko's game, Mormeck must try to keep him off balance by playing it low and smart. If he gets frustrated, the counterattack will become a big weapon.

Defend the Jab

Klitschko loves to use his jab to pick up easy points. He can dominate an entire round simply by keeping his foe on his heels with a flurry of combinations, including the powerful jab. Mormeck needs to do whatever he can to slow him down.

Easier said than done, of course, but it's just like any other sport. If a team is playing the Green Bay Packers, they will attempt to keep the passing game in check. Against the Miami Heat it's all about stopping them from getting fast-break points.

If Mormeck can limit damage from Klitschko's jab, he'll at least give himself an opportunity. That's more than most analysts are giving him right now.
