Vincent Jackson Would Be Perfect Fit with Washington Redskins in 2012

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

The Washington Redskins may (not surprisingly) look to make a big splash in free agency this year.

According to NFL reporter Mark Maske of The Washington Post, Daniel Snyder may be looking for a big-name wide receiver like Marques Colston, Pierre Garcon or Vincent Jackson.

The Washington Redskins are making plans to add a high-profile wide receiver in an NFL free-agent market that has them in abundance, according to several people familiar with the team’s deliberations.

Several people in the sport said a leading target for the Redskins could be San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson. The issue with Jackson, as with some of the other top receivers with expiring contracts, is whether he will remain available after Monday’s deadline for teams to use their franchise-player tags.

The Chargers, according to one source, have not ruled out using their franchise-player designation on Jackson but seem to be leaning against doing so.

While Colston and especially Garcon could have better chances to hit the open market and would probably a come at a more reasonable price, Jackson's the guy Washington must target when the free agency period begins on March 13th.

The Redskins simply do not have a legitimate deep-threat wideout that can separate and consistently make big plays.

Santana Moss isn't a terrible receiver, but he and Jabar Gaffney don't strike much fear into opposing secondaries.

Jackson would.

Although he disappeared for stretches in San Diego last season, he still caught 60 passes for 1,106 yards with nine touchdowns. His 18.4 yards per catch average was sixth in the NFL in 2011.

Jackson will especially be needed if the team is expecting to send a bundle of picks to the St. Louis Rams for the No. 2 overall pick to select Robert Griffin III.

He excelled last season en route to the Heisman Trophy by continuously throwing the ball downfield to Kendall Wright and Terrance Williams—two elite-speed receivers.

Although he possesses a ridiculous amount of athleticism and top-flight quarterback talent, when making his transition to the NFL, he'll desperately need a true No. 1 receiver that can stretch the field.

Vincent Jackson's the guy.

Open the checkbook once again, Mr. Snyder.
