If Redskins Use Sixth Overall Pick on Ryan Tannehill, They Can Kiss Fans Goodbye

John RozumFeb 28, 2012

According to Mike Jones of the Washington Post, the Redskins may consider Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill at No. 6 overall:

"

If Washington isn’t successful in moving up to the No. 2 overall spot, league sources expect them to select Tannehill, and some believe they would be inclined to use the sixth pick on him rather than trade down and try to get him later in the first round or in the second round.

"

Wel,l Redskins' fans, might as well pack in the 2012 season if Washington takes Tannehill at No. 6 overall.

For one, that's taking Tannehill way too high, and there are also a few tangible red flags.

First off, Tannehill came into Texas A&M as a receiver and spent 2008 and 2009 there before switching to quarterback in 2010. He became the starting quarterback halfway through 2010 and finished the final seven games at the helm.

Then, obviously spending all of 2011 leading the Aggies, Tannehill proved to be a dual-threat quarterback but didn't develop into your prototypical NFL signal-caller. After all, this was a former receiver taking snaps, so, if anything, his production of over 3,700 passing yards with 29 touchdowns to 15 picks is worth noting.

That being said, Tannehill started just 20 games, and it's not like the Big 12 was known for stout defenses.

Now, Tannehill did in fact learn quickly, but it's a completely different ballgame in the NFL. Additionally, Tannehill missed the Senior Bowl and combine because of a foot injury, which, despite not being considered serious, warrants a red flag.

With a depleted receiving corps, an offensive line that allowed 41 sacks in 2011 and a weak rushing offense, the Redskins need a guy who's healthy and has proven consistency at the quarterback position.

There is, however, no doubt about Tannehill's size at 6'4", 220 pounds, or his strong arm, mobility and good intangibles. But, by comparison to other quarterback in the draft, Tannehill doesn't have the evidence on his side that makes him a comfortable first-round selection, let alone the top 10.

Other than quarterback, the Redskins have multiple options to consider at No. 6 to improve the franchise. The defense could add depth to the secondary with LSU's Morris Claiborne, improve the offensive line with Iowa offensive tackle Riley Reiff or take Alabama running back Trent Richardson. At least he would make the rushing offense more threatening to setup the passing game. Plus, Richardson is a dual-threat guy who also knows how to pass block quite well.

And if none of those paths are chosen, then trading down from the No. 6 spot and loading up for the 2013 NFL draft isn't a bad idea.

The question with the decision, however, is the future of head coach Mike Shanahan after the 2012 season.

So, it's the obvious the Redskins are in somewhat of a pickle despite having a top-10 draft choice.

Still, going with Tannehill that high is a risk considering his lack of experience and durability. If anything, Washington must be safe with the selection and look to improve on any of the aforementioned weaknesses that cost them in 2011.
