LA Lakers: Reading into Kobe Bryant's All-Star Weekend Performance

Matt ShetlerJun 7, 2018

Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant missed the media sessions before and after All-Star Weekend in Orlando, but in between, he was a busy man, with a place in the record book and a concussion to show for it.

As the All-Star Game gets younger and younger every season, it was the old guy who made a statement.

Message received.

Bryant, with his business-like attitude, got off to a great start, and by the end of the night, he found himself passing the great Michael Jordan to become the All-Star Game's all-time leading scorer with 262 points.

In a game filled with the league's best scorers, Bryant reminded the fans that he's still the NBA's best until he decides otherwise.

It was the legends that he passed on the night though that means the most to Bryant.

He broke Jordan's record on a dunk with 4:57 left in the third quarter, and after a 27-point night, now has 271 points for his career. He entered the game with 244 and also passed Oscar Robertson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar earlier in the game.

He's now the greatest of the greatest when it comes to scoring in the All-Star Game, and he can say otherwise, but believe me, it means a great deal to Bryant.

Passing Jordan in anything when it comes to the record book means a great deal.

He also started his 13th All-Star Game, tying a record, and was gunning for his fifth MVP award which would give him the most all time, but that will have to wait until next season as Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant raised that trophy at the end of the night.

The serious attitude coming in and the aggressiveness offensively showed us it was about passing Jordan, and he did so.

Of course, he got a broken nose and a mild concussion to show for it on a hard foul from Dwyane Wade, according to Yahoo Sports Adrian Wojnarowski.

If Bryant plans on issuing a receipt to Wade, it could come soon as the Lakers will see the Miami Heat this Sunday.

But judging by his demeanor during the weekend, it wasn't about having fun on Saturday night, it was about taking care of business on Sunday.

Mission accomplished for Bryant.
