UFC 144 Results: Tim Boetsch and the 5 Best Comebacks in UFC History

Kyle SymesJun 7, 2018

Everyone loves an underdog. Everyone loves a comeback even more. Last night at UFC 144, Tim Boetsch completed one of the greatest comebacks in UFC history.

Down two rounds to none, Boetsch came out and kept the judges from deciding his fate by dropping his opponent Yushin Okami.

As you will see, all the matches on this list have the same ingredients as Boetsch-Okami. We all sat and were ready to count the fighter out, our scorecards were penciled in and we were ready for a drink/bathroom break.

And then it happened...

Mike Russow vs. Todd Duffee

1 of 5

Todd Duffee's career got off to a rousing start as he set a UFC record for the fastest KO in UFC history. Mike Russow was supposed to simply be a veteran for Duffee to pad his record with.

For the first two rounds, it seemed like Russow was playing the part well.

In the final frame, Duffee was perhaps head hunting far too much and was dropped by a huge punch from Russow. The punch was the stand up equivalent of Anderson Silva's triangle against Chael Sonnen at UFC 117.

Instead of using Russow's name to build himself up, Duffee's career fell apart as he was released from the UFC and suffered a humiliating loss to Alistair Overeem in his next bout.

Tim Boetsch vs. Yushin Okami

2 of 5

For two rounds, Yushin Okami looked to be cruising towards an unanimous decision. Okami had looked great and it seemed his opponent, Tim Boetsch couldn't mount any offense.

Then the third round started and Boetsch came out swinging. Boetsch clipped and stagger Okami against the cage. Sensing his time was now, Boetsch kept the pressure and dropped his opponent with some unique clinch work.

We've seen many fighters be down on the scorecards yet not feel the sense of urgency to finish a fight.

Boetsch sensed the urgency and provided one of the greatest comebacks in UFC history.

Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin

3 of 5

Brock Lesnar may not be able to take a punch but during his first round against Shane Carwin, Lesnar took quite a beating. Landing some of the most powerful punches we've seen in the heavyweight division lately, Carwin nearly took the heavyweight title in under five minutes.

Somehow Lesnar survived the first round and it seemed we were another round away from watching Carwin turn Lesnar's face into hamburger meat.

Lactic acidosis aside, Lesnar secured a takedown and quickly looked to turn the tables on Carwin. Using his great top game, the heavyweight champion applied an arm triangle choke and had his hand raised.

The beating Lesnar took during the first round was simply inhuman but the champion fought through the adversity to utilize his superior skills to retain his world title.

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard II

4 of 5

Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard's last two bouts were almost mirror images of each other.

I'm choosing their second meeting as being the greater comeback because although Edgar was hurt in their third encounter, the first round in Edgar-Maynard II was about as close to a 10-7 round as possible.

Edgar didn't get the finish in this fight, but he certainly came back from much more adversity in their second meeting. Maynard's power punches nearly put the champion away multiple times within the first five minutes.

The lightweight champion pulled off a miracle by not only surviving the initial beating, but also by coming back strong as the rounds wore on. Even though the fight was officially scored as a draw, many fans had Edgar winning.

Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen

5 of 5

After nearly 25 minutes of fighting, Chael Sonnen had put a beating on the champion Anderson Silva like we had never seen before.

Sonnen utilized his wrestling to keep Silva on the mat and pounded away with punches. Silva seemed unable to use his jiu-jitsu and was on the verge of losing his title.

In a move that fans saw a mile away, Silva slapped on a triangle choke that forced a tapout from Sonnen. "The Spider's" aura of invincibility was all but destroyed by Sonnen's ground and pound. Silva would erase that thought from our minds by proving his fortitude as a champion.

The bout had great hype to go along with great competition. Silva-Sonnen II promises to be just as great.
