Derrick Rose: Chicago Bulls Star Signs Second-Biggest Shoe Deal Ever
Chicago Bulls stud point guard Derrick Rose may not quite be to the level of legend Michael Jordan on the basketball court, but when it comes to endorsing sneakers, D-Rose is closer to "His Airness" than any man has ever come before.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Rose and Adidas agreed to a deal that guarantees him at least 13 years and $185 million. With incentives, however, the monster contract could pay out over $200 million.
On top of that, CNBC's Darren Rovell is reporting that the deal is the second-richest shoe contract in history, trailing only Jordan's iconic partnership with Nike. With Rose chasing Jordan in Bulls history, it only seems fitting that he is doing the same in this instance.
What it Means
Rose's huge agreement with Adidas basically tells us that the company has a huge amount of confidence in Rose's future as a player and a spokesman. It's easy to understand why as the 23-year-old Rose is already the best point guard in the league and coming off an MVP season.
This new deal could net Rose $14 million per year, however he is dwarfed in comparison to Jordan who still makes more than $60 million per year from Nike, according to Rovell.
Adidas is obviously investing heavily in him, and there is some risk involved as a freak injury could derail his career and render the partnership moot, but all signs point to Rose having a very long and fruitful career. It won't be easy to match Jordan's six NBA championships, but Rose should help the Bulls win another title soon enough.
What Happens Next
Now Rose will merely sit back and let his already-ample bank account grow even more. Rose will obviously have to partake in events in appear in commercials by virtue of the contract, but he'll basically be pulling down millions of dollars simply for having his name attached to a product.
Jordan has been retired for several years, but Nike's Air Jordans are still huge sellers, helping Jordan remain relevant and wealthy. Rose can only hope to have a career that matches Jordan's, both on the court and in the shoe business.
