Daytona 500 Odds: Favorites Who Won't Win Great American Race
As we head into Sunday's Daytona 500, there are plenty of contenders to start 2012 off with a bang.
There's, of course, last year's Spring Cup champion, Tony Stewart. You also have Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and even Dale Earnhardt Jr., who has looked good thus far.
Here are the contenders I don't see winning the Daytona 500.
3. Jimmie Johnson
Jimmie Johnson had has championship streak stopped by Stewart last year, placing sixth after the final race.
Johnson's car was also deemed to have illegal modifications on Feb. 17, starting his year off on the wrong track.
Johnson is a historic driver, but I just haven't seen enough from him thus far to give him Daytona, let alone the championship this year.
2. Dale Earnhardt Jr.
This may seem like an easy choice, given Dale Earnhardt Jr. hasn't won a race in 129 consecutive starts, but he's actually looked a lot better this year headed into Daytona.
Plus, pack racing is Earnhardt's specialty. He's admitted that the tandem racing from before didn't suit him well.
But I still don't think he'll have enough to win his second career Daytona 500 on Sunday. I think he'll be one of the front-runners, but there are so many good drivers this year.
1. Carl Edwards
Carl Edwards may have been the runner-up for the championship last year, but he's on the outside looking in on the Daytona 500 this year.
He had a good finish in the first Gatorade Duel, placing fifth, but I still don't see the burst and momentum for him to actually capture the Daytona 500.
Edwards will stay with the pack, but won't have enough to separate himself.
