Miami Dolphins: An Overreaction to Joe Philbin and Jeff Ireland's Comments

Erik FrenzFeb 24, 2012

According to Omar Kelly of the Miami Sun-Sentinel, Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin likes the 2012 draft class and has something very specific in mind when it comes to offensive linemen.

"

"We want to see a guy who can stay on his feet and play the game on his feet," said Philbin according to the Sun-Sentinel. "He can't be on the ground a whole lot. We like the guy to have some quickness. A guy who can initially get off on the snap count. We like a guy who can adjust a little bit. A lot of things happen post snap in the National Football League. ...It's pretty simple if a guy stands right in front of you and never moves, but as you know defenses certainly change once the ball snaps," Philbin said.

The Dolphins just watched All-Pro guard Logan Mankins become nothing more than a turnstile at the hands of defensive stalwart Justin Tuck, whose quickness inside has given Mankins big problems in the Patriots' two Super Bowl losses.

And if the Dolphins are looking to add talent on the offensive line, this would be a good year to do it. At least, that's what general manager Jeff Ireland said on Thursday at the scouting combine (via the Sun-Sentinel).

"

"I think that's one position that is pretty good, actually," he said to the media. "You look at it, and you put a grade on a guy that may not be that high, then you get a chance to go through the combine, and get some of the juniors into the class; I think the offensive line is a pretty good group."

"

Those words may seem fairly innocuous in their own right, but coupled with Philbin's words upon taking the reins as Dolphins head coach, they take new shape.

"

"Football isn't an overly complicated game," Philbin said upon being introduced as the Dolphins new head coach, according to Kelly via Sulia.com. "As the offensive coordinator in Green Bay I used to stand up in front of the offense and ask them if they can count to four. If they can count to four you can play in the Packer offense."

Overreaction: The Dolphins Will Not Trade Up For Robert Griffin III

Sorry to any fans who were hoping this was the year the Dolphins finally took the plunge on a top-tier quarterback in the first round, 29 years after the last time they did so with Dan Marino.

Judging by the fact that not only do the Dolphins like the top talent on the offensive line in this year's draft, but that they apparently value top talent on the offensive line and also don't require superior intellect at the position, we can connect the pieces to the puzzle to reasonably conclude that the Dolphins will not trade up for RG3, but we just never know with the misdirection teams are known for in the draft.
