Special Super Smackdown Analysis and Possible WrestleMania Changes
Tuesday night's special Super Smackdown episode was a bit more entertaining than it normally is. I don't know if it's for the fact that it was live and we didn't have to wait all week to watch results we already knew about.
The fact is, at least for me, that tonight's episode was almost a breath of fresh air compared to what we're used to seeing on Friday nights.
There have been some new feuds developing on Smackdown that have been quite entertaining since last week, and even some experimentation from the creative staff.
Let's take a look at how Tuesday unfolded, and some possible changes at WrestleMania that could result from events tonight.
Sheamus vs. Miz
1 of 4If nothing else, the main reason Smackdown could have been a little more exciting this week is because of all the Raw talent that was around for the show. I understand that Smackdown has a roster full of talent that they need to expose, but integrating the A-listers is never bad for business.
I'm not going to sit around and try to think of some kind of storyline that might be being formulated because of the match that Miz and Sheamus had on Tuesday night. The bottom line is Bryan, Miz and Sheamus staged a half-decent promo that set the stage for an entertaining match.
One thing that makes me stop and think about whether Bryan will actually be losing the title at WrestleMania is the way they lead Sheamus into his matches, though.
There always seems to be some dialogue before a match of his, almost in the sense that the WWE feels they have to put him over to get a pop from the crowd.
From Air Boom to Air Truth?
2 of 4The tag team of Kofi Kingston and R-Truth could be more entertaining than most people think, and quite possibly, a bigger crowd pleaser than Air Boom.
Kofi is the type of wrestler who will never be an upper-echelon star, but still has the crowd draw of one and will always be a fan favorite.
Couple that with R-Truth's sheer comedic abilities and the fact that he's currently being mentored by HHH, and you have the recipe for a tag team with the wrestling and crowd-popping characteristics like Eddie & Chavo Guerrero.
Obviously their opponents on Tuesday night in Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler make for no real tag competition, but it still makes for an all-around good wrestling match.
When I mentioned earlier about new things being tested out in the last week or so, this was one of them.
Taking chances during this time of year is not something we're used to from the WWE, but it's good to see them thinking outside of the box, and putting together some stuff that's easy and fun to watch.
Big Show vs. Mark Henry
3 of 4This is a "rivalry" that became played out months ago, and most people got tired of it at about the same time.
The ring imploding at Vengeance was probably the climax of it, and that is where the creative staff should have looked to let it die away. But like everything else these days, they just won't let it die.
In reality, Big Show and Mark Henry can't even have a real wrestling match per se.
The only thing missing from this "feud" is really The Great Khali.
CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan and WrestleMania Implications?
4 of 4For the last two nights, we've seen the respective general managers for both shows pit their best against each other, as you may have it.
We've seen David Otunga emerge victorious in both those matches, and tonight the fans of the WWE Universe got what could have been the most entertaining match of the year thus far in a Champion vs. Champion match.
CM Punk and Daniel Bryan are two of the company's, and the business' for that matter, best technicians around. They kept my eyes glued to the TV for the duration of the match, even through not one but two restarts.
Normally I would find something like that to be particularly annoying, but as you saw what began to unfold between Teddy Long and John Laurinitis, it actually became intriguing.
Let's talk about that for a second.
We know that there are already four matches booked to the WrestleMania card: Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus, CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho, Undertaker vs. HHH and The Rock vs. John Cena. Those matches alone could take almost three hours, but you still need some fillers in between, right?
With no one really around to contend for the US or Intercontinental Titles, could we see a Team Long v. Team Laurinaitis match for control of both shows as the implication? It would definitely be an entertaining storyline, if nothing else.
