Jeremy Lin ESPN Headline: Media Giant Wisely Trying to Move Past Blunder Quickly
ESPN made a major mistake by running a headline that read: "Chink in the Armor: Jeremy Lin's 9 Turnovers Cost Knicks in Streak-stopping Loss to Hornets.”
This was a boneheaded, possibly racist move that should have been prevented, but people must now begin to move on from the situation as the conglomerate has done everything they could to atone for their grave error.
The company launched the headline up on their mobile site between 2:30 and 3:05 a.m. EDT on Saturday night, and soon Twitter and other social media platforms ignited in outrage.
The Worldwide Leader is doing full damage control and has reportedly taken swift action according to their stated apology. The statement read:
""The ESPN employee responsible for our Mobile headline has been dismissed."
"
It also seems like they are going to try and learn from this to make sure it never happens again. The statement later said:
""We again apologize, especially to Mr. Lin. His accomplishments are a source of great pride to the Asian-American community, including the Asian-American employees at ESPN. Through self-examination, improved editorial practices and controls, and response to constructive criticism, we will be better in the future."
"
This brief apology and promise to commit to improvement is just about all the media giant can do and the best course of action.
By lingering on the subject, it will only continue to draw unwanted criticism and debate. They need to bury this and move on, which is exactly what happened.
The employee responsible was fired, the apology was made and honestly nothing more can be done. It was a terrible mistake, and a lesson must be gleaned from it, but enough has been said about it.
