Michigan Football: Wolverines Add 5th and 6th Recruits to Hectic Saturday Haul

Joel GreerFeb 19, 2012

If landing four football recruits, hosting ESPN's "College GameDay" and upsetting Ohio State's basketball team weren't enough, Michigan completed “Super Saturday” by receiving two more commitments.

The late addition of Colorado offensive guard Chris Fox and Ohio defensive end Taco Charlton gave Michigan six commits for the day and total of nine for the 2013 class.

Earlier in the day, OT Kyle Bosch, OT David Dawson, DE/RB Wyatt Shallman and CB Jourdan Lewis committed to the Wolverines.

This, of course, places Michigan well ahead of the 2012 group which finished fourth on Scout's national ratings list. Due to Brady Hoke and his staff getting a late start last year, the Wolverines didn't tally their ninth commit until mid-May.

Saturday night's 56-51 basketball victory over Ohio State couldn't help but remind one of the football recruiting battle between Hoke and new Ohio State mentor Urban Meyer.

Already chastised by fellow Big Ten coaches for "unethical" recruiting practices, Meyer has found himself in a real battle with Hoke. Of the six players who've been offered by both schools, each coach has picked up three. Fox, Shallman and safety Dymonte Thomas have committed to Michigan, while CB Eli Woodward, CB Cameron Burrows and DT Billy Price chose Ohio State.

Meanwhile, Michigan State is off to a slow start, receiving commitments from only two players. The Spartans also had a rather unimpressive 2012 class, finishing 37th nationally.

Fox, a 6'5”, 300-pound 4-star recruit, is the third offensive lineman to commit.

“I’ve known I wanted to go there since I went to their summer camp last year and there’s nothing better than Michigan,” Fox told Scout.com. “I’ve just known in my mind that that’s where it’s at. It has everything…the coaches, facilities and location…I’ve got tons of family out there. It’s the best.”

Although Charlton has been leaning toward Michigan for some time, his appearance at the basketball game was the clincher.

"

"It was just everything about it,” Charlton said. “After seeing that basketball game and talking to the coaches, you just couldn’t pass it up. It’s everything you want in a college. It wasn’t anyone I picked them over. They were just the best one out of everyone I had. They just felt like the right choice.”

"

Charlton, a 6'5”, 235-pound defensive end, chose Michigan over Notre Dame, Nebraska, UCLA and Nebraska.

Before Saturday's haul, QB Shane Morris, S Dymonte Thomas and TE Khalid Hill agreed to join the Wolverines.

Morris, one of the top two or three quarterback recruits in the nation, has been trying to bring some of the nation's better players with him.

"

“It's something I like to do, actually,” said Morris. “I like it a lot. I like recruiting. I feel like I can connect with people very well. I'm a very outgoing person. If my dream comes up a little short and I don't end up making it to the NFL, which is my dream, that is definitely something I would consider doing—being a recruiter."

"

If Morris has his way, running back Ty Isaac will soon be a Wolverine. Isaac, a member of the ESPN Underclass All-American Team, gained 2,629 last season for Joliet (Ill.) Catholic.
