Klitschko vs. Chisora: Stupid Slap Did Not Warrant Excessive Fine for Challenger

Michael DixonFeb 18, 2012

The only thing more ridiculous than Dereck Chisora's slap of Vitali Klitschko is the fine that the WBC has decided to level on Chisora.

If you have yet to see the slap or need a good laugh, watch the following video:

In reporting the fine, Fox Sports quoted WBC president Jose Sulaiman. His words show the very problem with this punishment, and why it's truly excessive.

"[Chisora is] no gentleman at all, and he's failed in what we expect from boxers...He wanted Vitali to lose control, but Vitali will make him pay for this in the ring, definitely."

"

Let's take a look at the second part of that first. If this slap really woke Klitschko up and inspires him some more, then Chisora is going to receive more than enough punishment when he steps into the ring.

Chisora is the underdog in this fight. It would have been very easy for Klitschko to overlook him, which is how massive upsets happen. Now, Klitschko is all too aware of Chisora and will be completely motivated.

When stepping into the ring with a 6'7" monster who's knocked 40 men out, the last thing I would want to do would be to make that man mad. Chisora did that against Klitschko and will pay for it when the bell rings. That is more than enough punishment here.

But as bad as that part of the reasoning is, it pales in comparison to the first part of what Sulaiman said: "He's failed in what we expect from boxers."

I am not at all convinced that this wasn't scripted, and the greatest debater in the world couldn't convince me that what we saw was genuine. This happens all the time in the world of boxing. It is how fights are sold.

Don't believe me? Well, if you remember the Mike Tyson vs. Lennox Lewis fight, you would know that something a lot more volatile than a slap happened.

We've even seen it from Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, far more stable fighters than Tyson ever was.

The point is that this is exactly what we expect from boxers. Acting like it's unprecedented and dropping a heavy fine on someone for doing the same thing that's been practiced in his sport for years is ridiculous.

There is no reason for this fine. It was a slap, he did nothing to endanger the fight. If he started a brawl that put either fighter's health at risk, then I would be on board with a fine. But that was just a little wake up call. My guess is that Klitschko can take a little slap.

I am not saying you have to like Chisora's actions, but this is not a fine that needed to happen. If anything, it made the fight more interesting and honored the sport's past. Let the punishment come in the ring. That is where Chisora will end up regretting his actions.
