2012 Westminster Dog Show: Malachy the Pekingese Stands Out as Best in Show
The 2012 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show crowned this year’s winner and to say that Malachy the Pekingese was the best in show would be an understatement.
According to Dog News, Malachy was last year’s No. 2 dog and wins the event in his last chance. At four years old, this is the last time the Pekingese will be participating in the show.
While his stride was much slower in the final showing, which was thought by many as a possible hiccup for the dog, the judge appreciated his stability and awarded him as such.
Handler and co-owner David Fitzpatrick told the New York Times about the honor of winning:
"It’s the thrill of a lifetime. He was giving me all the vibrations that he was very relaxed. He’s a very happy dog and an extrovert in the ring.
"
For those that don’t understand the magnitude of what Malachy has accomplished in the dog world, it equates to the breeding Super Bowl.
That’s why a dog going out on top is the perfect story for this event.
With the American love of pets, the idea of a dog putting in its work and then retiring after winning it all to an easy life of being a dog is what we could all get behind. I’m pretty sure that’s the new American dream.
As for the rest of the dogs, there is no shame in losing—especially to a perfect specimen of a breed such as Malachy.
Overall, this was another wonderful year of amazing dog show action.
