UFC 144: Frankie Edgar Sees Difficulty in Preparing for Benson Henderson
Frankie Edgar has been through his fair share of battles over the last few years, and he is about to embark on another one in the form of challenger Benson Henderson.
The two lightweights are set to meet in the main event at UFC 144, in what is expected to be an intriguing, competitive fight between two of the division's most exciting fighters.
Both Edgar and Henderson have cemented their statuses in the UFC for putting forth some of the most fallacious bouts in recent memory, yet they usually find a way to survive and pull off the victory.
Edgar appeared on HDNet's "Inside MMA" and spoke about his preparation of his upcoming title defense. Edgar said he was aware of the accomplishments his opponent brings to the fight, but he admits Henderson is unlike anyone he has faced in his career so far.
"It's tough," Edgar said. "You get a little mixture of this and that in different guys and you try to prepare the best you can for him. He scrambles really well and he's a great athlete."
Both men have been successful in recent bouts and both have looked equally impressive.
Edgar has successfully defended the UFC lightweight title on three separate occasions, beating former champion BJ Penn twice and handing Gray Maynard his first loss as well.
Henderson has looked nothing short of dominant since his last loss to Anthony Pettis in December 2010, remaining undefeated in the UFC, compiling three consecutive victories over top competitors like Clay Guida and Jim Miller.
Edgar said he is anticipating a five-round bout with Henderson, should it go the distance. While the champion has worked hard to remain successful inside the Octagon, he is also aware of the current run Henderson has built for himself.
"He's been on a tear since he's been over here in the UFC," he said. "He's beat three top guys; all contenders. He's the man right now. So, he's got a lot of steam behind him."
