Davonte Neal: Why Arkansas Has Best Shot at Landing Top Recruit
Scottsdale Chaparral High football star Davonte Neal is the only recruit in ESPNU's Top 150 who has yet to commit to a program.
And he's been clear that he won't commit until Feb. 21.
But, right now, it appears Arkansas has the upper hand.
Neal has narrowed it down to four final schools: Arkansas, Notre Dame, North Carolina and Arizona.
According to Richard Obert of the Arizona Republic, who has been following Neal like a hound, Arkansas and Notre Dame have the best chances of landing the 5-star athlete.
But there is reason for Neal to commit to Arkansas. In short, Arkansas has reportedly committed to letting him play receiver and special teams, while Notre Dame has only guaranteed he'd play special teams.
I could be wrong, but in my mind the No. 8 recruit in the nation probably wants to get on the field as soon as possible, and the prospect of playing in the legendary SEC is always enticing.
Neal isn't the biggest player (5'10", 175 pounds), but he's an elite athlete. His acceleration and speed is exceptional, and he practically glides around the field—this allows him to create space very easily. He also is explosive after catch and could be a touchdown machine in college under the right system.
Also, don't forget, the Razorbacks have Tyler Wilson at quarterback, who had a very good junior season. Wilson passed for over 3,600 yards and 24 touchdowns to six interceptions in 2011.
The fact that Arkansas missed out on the top receiver in the class, Dorial Green-Beckham, may also mean Neal will get more playing time at Arkansas.
If Neal's decision is indeed between Arkansas and Notre Dame, I see him landing with the Razorbacks.
