Chelsea FC: Roman Abramovich Must Leave Andre Villas-Boas Alone

Dan RenfroJun 7, 2018

Roman Abramovich needs to back off.

On Monday, it was confirmed that the owner met with Andre Villas-Boas and the team following the embarrassing 2-0 defeat at Everton. Surely, Abramovich voiced his disappointment, anger, frustration and whatever else he had going on his head. Essentially, he was letting the team (and manager) know that a result like that was, and is, unacceptable.

That's fine.

The players know it's horrible. The manager knows it's horrible. And you can be sure the fans know it's horrible.

So why bother?

Why would Abramovich even bother to say something?

Obviously, he wants to have a hands-on approach, and he wants the club to play well. However, that doesn't mean he has any business getting this involved.

All things considered, with two trophies still attainable (we're not counting the Premiership) and a Champions League berth on the line, this meeting can be rationalized.

I don't like the idea, but I see where Abramovich is coming from.

Now he needs to let the season run its course.

This has not been a good first year for Villas-Boas' reign, but everyone has known that for about a month now. Things aren't going well, but things can get a lot worse.

The pressure is on, and Abramovich doesn't seem to mind pouring more on. He needs to back off.

Villas-Boas is trying to completely change a culture. If anyone honestly thought things would turn around in August, they are foolish and don't know a thing about football. This change takes time. No one likes it, but it's the truth.

For this year, Chelsea were hoping to have a top four finish, a domestic final and a Champions League quarterfinal appearance. All three of those are still possible.

There's no reason to panic. If Abramovich thinks axing Villas-Boas would be a smart move, he has another thing coming.

He made his choice; now he has to stand by AVB.

If Abramovich starts hanging around the locker room more often, the players and coaching staff will continue to struggle. If Abramovich takes a step back, things could turn around.

Look, if May comes around and Chelsea are out of the top four, had a no-show in the FA Cup and couldn't defeat Napoli in the Champions League, then reconsider the future.

For now, Abramovich, back off. It's for the best.
