2012 MLB Fantasy Baseball Additional Shortstop Options
We already looked at the LestersLegends’ top 15 fantasy baseball shortstops for 2012, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t additional options if you choose to wait on filling your shortstop slot to address other positions. Alternatively, many leagues offer middle infield slots, which put these options on your radar.
Washington’s Ian Desmond swiped 25 bases last year. The rest of his line (.253-65-8-49) does little to get anybody excited. He’s 26 this year though, and it would not be out of the question if he suddenly got it. Considering he combined to hit .295 in August and September with five HR and 22 RBI, he may have already done so.

Yankees Call Up 6'7" Prospect 📈
Atlanta’s Alex Gonzalez is turning 35 this week, but he still has some pop in his bat. He has slugged 38 home runs over the past two seasons. He has moved on to Milwaukee. Gonzalez doesn’t bring much else to the table in a fantasy sense, but he is solid defensively, which should keep him in the lineup so he can add to his counting stats.
Yuniesky Betancourt is back with the Kansas City Royals. He is expected to backup Alcides Escobar at shortstop, as well as see time at second and third base. If Betancourt gets 500 to 550 at bats he should be a decent contributor in home runs and RBI. He doesn’t score a lot of runs, hit for average, or swipe bases so his upside is limited. He does give you positional flexibility. Meanwhile, Escobar is a guy who can rack up some stolen bases and score a fair share of runs for you.
Oakland’s Cliff Pennington is about as sexy as owning Chad Pennington was in fantasy football leagues, but he has averaged a .257-61-7-52-22 line over the past two seasons. There are worse options.
San Diego’s Jason Bartlett has forgot how to hit (.254, .245 the past two seasons) and playing in San Diego doesn’t help, but he has swiped 20 or more bases in four of the past five seasons.
