WWE: Fantasy Booking the Content of CM Punk's Upcoming DVD/Blu-Ray Set

Robert AitkenFeb 15, 2012

As CM Punk prepares for his WWE Championship defense at Elimination Chamber this Sunday, the champion is also preparing for something a little bit more personal. Punk will have his own DVD set come out this year, anticipated for a September 2012 release.

On the DVD will be Punk's greatest moments and matches from his WWE career, which will include his stint on the ECW brand. With luck, Punk's DVD will also show matches from his development at Ohio Valley Wrestling, the former developmental territory of WWE.

As we travel further back, it becomes more and more unlikely. Will a WWE DVD collection really contain the footage of a match from Ring of Honor, the place where Punk got his big break?

There are plenty of high expectations for what this DVD set will show. What we do know for sure is that Punk himself will have his own opinion about what matches belong in the set and which ones do not.

With Punk's massive popularity, the fact that Punk will control what is shown, as well as the kind references to places like ROH in the past, is it any wonder that anything seems possible? If Punk is involved in the picking process, you know that there won't just be average matches from his WWE career sprinkled in.

Without worrying about where the matches came from or who they were with, here is a nice look at 15 potential matches and moments for Punk's DVD, in a perfect world at least.

Punk vs. Samoa Joe II

1 of 15

It's hard to say how much Ring of Honor content, if any, could be included. They were some of the best matches Punk ever had, but they were with a competing company. Even though ROH is leaps and bounds less than WWE in terms of exposure, revenue and popularity, it is still seen as close competition to TNA.

Speaking of TNA, one of their superstars is in this match. Samoa Joe and Punk put on three amazing matches, and fans have argued for years about how great they are.

An event held by ROH was named after this matchup. The first one went 60 minutes without a fall and was called a draw. The second matchup was originally scheduled for December 4, 2004, but was moved up due to scheduling conflicts.

On October 11, 2004, in Punk's hometown of Chicago, Punk and Samoa Joe wrestled yet another 60-minute draw. It was considered one of the best matches in American pro wrestling history.

The DVD was the best-selling DVD for ROH in their history. Dave Meltzer gave it a five-star rating, making it the first North American match with that rating since the first-ever Hell in a Cell match in 1997.

It's a long match that takes an hour, but it is absolutely amazing to see Punk make a name for himself with this match.

Punk Signs WWE Contract on ROH World Title

2 of 15

CM Punk was ready to move on from ROH and move to WWE when he tried out for WWE in 2005. In June of that year, Punk came to an agreement with WWE on a deal. Even still, Punk had to fulfill his ROH bookings.

In the same month that Punk came to terms with WWE, he won the ROH World Championship. This turned Punk into a heel who threatened to take the ROH title with him to WWE.

The original Summer of Punk then began.

Punk would make a bunch of threats about leaving with the title, even signing his WWE contract in a ROH ring and using the ROH World Championship as something to sign it on. This is an amazing promo that was so much fun to watch. It really shows that Punk's promo skills have always been a top priority for him.

Punk vs. Colt Cabana: Punk: The Final Chapter

3 of 15

Punk would lose the ROH world title in August 2005, but was still under contract with the company. In his final match before leaving for WWE, Punk would face long-time friend Colt Cabana in a two out of three falls match at a pay-per-view named for him.

At Punk: The Final Chapter on August 13, 2005, Punk would lose to Cabana. As streamers fell, which is customary in the rings of ROH, Punk was visibly crying as his ROH career was over. The good news was that his WWE career was just about to begin.

Punk vs. Mr. Kennedy: OVW

4 of 15

Punk didn't launch directly into WWE, but rather went to development first. On the roster of Ohio Valley Wrestling, the developmental territory at the time, Punk became a fan favorite. Punk debuted in OVW in September 2005, becoming the Television Champion two months later.

After losing that title in early 2006, Punk would begin to trail the OVW Championship. After Matt Cappotelli, from the fame of Tough Enough 2, vacated the title to deal with a brain tumor, a tournament was held.

Punk would lose in the finals of the tournament to Brent Albright, who would later be known in WWE as Gunner Scott (no relation to TNA's Gunner). In May 2006, Punk won a strap match to win the strap: the OVW Heavyweight Championship.

Punk was a fighting champion and one that defended against a wide variety of people. While Punk defended against the likes of Johnny Jeter, The Miz and Shad Gaspard, perhaps his greatest title defense came against Mr. Kennedy.

Punk vs. Justin Credible: ECW 2006

5 of 15

Punk debuted in the ECW brand in 2006, defeating Stevie Richards inside the ECW Arena. Punk would then begin to cut TV promos for the brand before he finally debuted on TV on August 1, 2006. Inside the Hammerstein Ballroom, Punk defeated Justin Credible and was quickly on his way in the WWE.

Punk vs. John Morrison: ECW 2007

6 of 15

Punk was hot on the heels of the famed ECW Championship belt. If there was anyone in the new incarnation of the Land of Extreme to breathe new life into the title, it would be Punk.

After a few chances at it, Punk would fall in the finals of a tournament to Johnny Nitro, who would become John Morrison the following week on ECW television.

Morrison was a frustrating champion for Punk to chase. Finally, after multiple chances at Morrison over the summer, Punk had his last chance at the title in September 2007. Punk would finally end up winning the championship and proceeded to celebrate with the ECW fans.

Money in the Bank: WrestleMania XXIV

7 of 15

Perhaps the most impressive Money in the Bank win for Punk was his first one. While Punk would win the same match a year later at WrestleMania XXV, the one at WrestleMania XXIV was just a better match. Punk would outlast MVP, Carlito, Chris Jericho, John Morrison, Shelton Benjamin and Mr. Kennedy in the first seven-man Money in the Bank match in history.

Punk Cashes in MITB on Edge

8 of 15

Punk would hold onto that briefcase for a few months. In June 2008, Punk was drafted to the RAW brand via the WWE Draft. The following week would see Batista attack Edge, who was on his way to the Smackdown brand with the World Heavyweight Championship.

After the beatdown from The Animal, Punk ran out with his briefcase, hit a GTS, and won the World Heavyweight Championship. It was a great moment in Punk's career and one of the more shocking title changes in RAW history.

Punk vs. Jeff Hardy: SummerSlam 2009

9 of 15

After his second Money in the Bank briefcase win, Punk would cash in on Jeff Hardy at Extreme Rules 2009, turning heel in the process. Punk would continue his feud with Hardy, citing his straight edge lifestyle and referencing Hardy's history with drugs.

At Night of Champions, Hardy would regain the World Heavyweight Championship, but the feud would not end. It would, however, end at SummerSlam in a TLC match. Punk, who had mastered the Money in the Bank ladder match, got the better of one of the pioneers of the TLC match.

Punk Forms the Straight Edge Society

10 of 15

In November 2009, CM Punk would officially form the Straight Edge Society, a faction that followed Punk as a type of messiah. It began with Luke Gallows debuting, repackaged from his Festus gimmick.

Punk cited that the Festus personality was from Gallows being hooked on prescription pills. The group would have a female join in Serena, as well as Joey Mercury, who was previously fired from WWE for his drug use.

Punk vs. Rey Mysterio: WrestleMania XXVI

11 of 15

The main feud for the Straight Edge Society was with Rey Mysterio. Punk went after the lucha libre wrestler to expose his face and show the fan favorite as nothing more than an average man wearing a mask.

Punk tried to "save" Mysterio and faced him at WrestleMania for a chance to force Mysterio to join the SES. Mysterio would defeat Punk at WrestleMania and then defeat him at Extreme Rules with Punk's hair on the line.

Punk Shoots on WWE RAW

12 of 15

CM Punk was out of the title picture for the good part of 2010 before injuring himself. The Straight Edge Society was no more, and Punk would return to take over control of The New Nexus. After a feud with Randy Orton led to yet another WrestleMania loss, Punk faded to the back burner again.

It was after a win over Rey Mysterio at Capitol Punishment that WWE's version of the Summer of Punk began.

The following night was RAW's Power to the People episode, which saw Punk win the No. 1 contendership for the WWE Championship. It was at this point that Punk announced his contract disputes with the company.

On June 27, 2011, Punk unleashed the promo heard around the wrestling world. Nobody was safe. From mentions of New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor to mentions of Paul Heyman and Brock Lesnar, there were deliberate violations of the suspected taboos in WWE.

For good measure, Punk took shots at Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon, Triple H and John Laurinaitis before having his microphone cut off.

Punk vs. John Cena: Money in the Bank 2011

13 of 15

Punk's contract was supposedly going to run out the day after the Money in the Bank pay-per-view, which was held in Punk's hometown of Chicago.

In a fantastic match that is called one of the best for both Punk and Cena in their careers, Punk came out victorious and won the WWE Championship for the first time in his career. This was yet another certified five-star match for Punk, his first and only in WWE at this point.

The crowd in Chicago was pro-Punk, and the uncertainty as to what was going to happen afterwards was a secret to basically everyone. If there is a reason to make a CM Punk DVD, this has to be the first match that comes to mind.

Punk vs. Alberto Del Rio: Survivor Series 2011

14 of 15

Following Punk's absence from WWE, the company held a tournament to crown a new champion, which was won by Rey Mysterio. John Cena then faced Mysterio for the title and won the title for a record 10th time. At that moment, Punk returned to WWE, claiming to still be champion.

The titles would be unified at SummerSlam 2011, which was won by Punk. Following a random attack by Kevin Nash, Alberto Del Rio cashed in Money in the Bank to win the WWE Championship.

Punk never received a one-on-one rematch until Survivor Series in Madison Square Garden. In the World's Most Famous Arena, Punk came out victorious to start his second reign with the WWE Championship, a title that Punk still holds.

Punk vs. Chris Jericho: WrestleMania XXVIII

15 of 15

This match hasn't even happened yet, but with a release date expected for this fall, I would still like to see this match on the DVD.

Since returning to WWE earlier this year, Chris Jericho has wanted to reclaim the title of being the best wrestler in the world, a title that Jericho feels Punk tried to copy him on. Following the Elimination Chamber, Punk will likely still have his WWE Championship, and Jericho will emerge as a contender for the WrestleMania showdown.

The fact that it hasn't even happened yet but already seems DVD-worthy says something about the hype for this clash.
