Luis Suarez Saga: It Just Won't Go Away

Russell HughesFeb 12, 2012

The Luis Suarez saga just won’t go away. It rears its ugly head just when you think you have conquered it forever.

Yesterday, Liverpool’s electric Uruguayan striker had the chance to bury the hatchet with Patrice Evra, and instead, he has fashioned one that shall be used on himself.

The handshake snub provoked a furious backlash. Within minutes the social networking site Twitter was awash with pictures, video links and comments about the incident. Most of it was directed at the Liverpool man, but a few conspiracy theorist (there will always be some) claimed that it was Evra who refused the hand of Suarez.

This cause of action doesn't really come as a surprise from a player who has bitten someone, handled the ball on the line to stop Ghana beating Uruguay and now been convicted as a racist. Wherever the unlikeable striker goes, controversy follows.

Whatever action that is taken, if any, of course rests with the owners, directors and manager of Liverpool FC. But judging by their steadfast defence of the player during his allegation, investigation and punishment, they will ignore the furore surrounding the issue and claim innocence.

Yesterday, Dalglish even claimed that he didn't see the incident, before launching an astonishing attack in the post-match interview, claiming that it was "bang out of order" to suggest that Suarez had done anything wrong.

Dalglish should have taken a leaf out of fellow Glaswegian Sir Alex Ferguson, who showed a degree of calmness when he acknowledged that Evra "shouldn't have done that," when talking about his players post-match celebrations, just yards away from the hangdog Suarez.

And what will all come out of this? Liverpool certainly won’t sell the player, as Ferguson suggested, did you see him giving Cantona his marching orders after his infamous karate kick at a Crystal Palace fan?

More likely, Liverpool will play the role of the proverbial ostrich, burying their heads in the sand and hoping that this will all go away.

Nobody really believes it will until Suarez does.
