Chelsea vs Everton: Analysis of 2-0 Loss at Goodison Park

Jesse PJun 7, 2018

As an avid Chelsea supporter, I have only one word to say about the current Chelsea, who had a terrible loss at Goodison Park this weekend—Disappointed.

Chelsea still has a world-class manager, players and facilities, but they cannot seem to produce any goods.

I haven't figured out who to blame, and I don't think just one person is at fault. The team seems dull going forward and too comfortable in possession. They give the ball away too cheaply and when some pressure is applied to them they react by continuing sloppy play and conceding easy goals.

Fernando Torres isn't on form and seems to always be away from play. He might have won two or three headers in the Everton game, but you expect way more from the center forward. I believe Daniel Sturridge should be given a shot in the center, or else Didier Drogba will regain he place come next week (which isn't a bad thing either).

Juan Mata is amazing. Almost every goal scoring opportunity comes from him.

Frank Lampard did an excellent job as captain today and kept his side under control. However, he gave the ball away too easily. There was sloppy passing from both him and Raul Meireles, and a deflected tackle that Steven Pienaar scored off of.

Meireles wasn't his best, but i think he had a better first half and was at least trying to play some through balls and create something. Other than this, he had way too many rash challenges.

Michael Essien isn't back just yet, but he was almost always looking to go forward with the ball. He did well intercepting some passes, however I don't know how long he will keep his starting place with Ramires set to hopefully come back next week.

Defensively it was the same old same old. Jose Bosingwa was terrible. Ashley Cole had some good runs, but they usually ended in a bad cross or dispossession. Branislav Ivanovic  and David Luiz never really "clicked" and were opened up too many times. Chelsea didn't have as much of a desire to defend, and it was extremely obvious.

Petr Cech did well to stop a few through balls and keep out the pressure. Despite Cech getting a hand on the ball, Denis Stracqualursi managed to score a goal. I think that he should have been able to prevent this.

Overall Andre Villas-Boas is in some real danger, and as much as I hate to see Chelsea sign more managers than players, I'm beginning to become more optimistic of the rumors of a Jose Mourinho return. AVB needs to win something this season and the FA cup seems the most doable.
