5 Free Agents the Jacksonville Jaguars Need to Pursue

David LevinJun 7, 2018

At some point, the Jacksonville Jaguars will have to make a decision.

Do they look to free agency to shore up holes on a defense that ranked sixth overall in the NFL, or do they look to the draft to find answers?

Or, does this team take the same approach they did last season and spend millions of dollars in free agency to fix an offense that was dead last in total offense in the league?

Either way, there are holes to be plugged on this team. Team owner Shahid Khan knows it. Head coach Mike Mularkey knows it. And general manager Gene Smith knows it.

The free agent pool has some very attractive players who could make an immediate impact in Jacksonville. Here are some players that need to be on the team's wish list once they can sign free agents in March.

Marques Colston, Wide Receiver, New Orleans

The top receiver in New Orleans is a free agent. There are at least 12 teams I can name who would love a shot at him, at 6'4" and 225 pounds and a great target over the middle or on a post pattern.

The former Hofstra player has made a name for himself as a scoring machine in Drew Brees' offense.

Look for the Jaguars to get in the sweepstakes for this talent.

Mario Williams, Defensive End, Houston

He could be the best defensive end in free agency.

Williams was playing better and looked to be part of the success of the Texans' defensive assault on the NFL.

He got hurt and went on injured reserve during the season, but the Houston defense continued its superior play. You have to wonder if the Texans will want him back or be willing to part with him.

If they do let him go, he could be the left end the Jaguars need in their pass rush.

Brent Grimes, Defensive Back, Atlanta

The Jaguars need more help in their secondary, which was pedestrian midway through the season with injuries.

Grimes shores up the back end with the help of Drew Coleman, Dawan Landry and Dwight Lowery.

He can also aid in the return game.

All you need to know is that when he was in the Falcons' lineup, the secondary was at its best. When he was injured and out of the lineup, the backs had issues with coverage.

Stevie Johnson, Wide Receiver, Buffalo Bills

4 of 5

While he is slightly flamboyant, he can catch with the best of them.

Of all the receivers on the open market, the Jaguars may have the best shot of landing him over bigger-named talent.

Johnson is a speedster and immediately gives Blaine Gabbert a top target. It also means Mike Thomas can concentrate on being a slot receiver.

Ben Grubbs, Guard, Baltimore Ravens

5 of 5

This pick might sound odd, but if the Jaguars can get better on its offensive line, then Blaine Gabbert would have more time to throw.

The offensive line opened holes for Maurice Jones-Drew all season, but it looked lost at times in pass coverage.

Grubbs is a thick, solid guard who can pass and run block as well as anyone.

Can he come to Jacksonville and open holes for MJD like he did for Ray Rice? And can he help protect a timid passer who needs time to find receivers?
