Fabio Capello Resigns: Harry Redknapp Would Be Great Replacement for England

Tim DanielsFeb 9, 2012

Stuart Pearce will replace Fabio Capello on an interim basis following the resignation of England's national team manager, but the search for a long-term solution is just beginning. All things considered, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp would be a terrific choice to fill the void.

The Daily Mail reports Redknapp is one of the favorites, but the FA isn't willing to guarantee the next boss will be British:

"

Harry Redknapp has become the overwhelming favourite to succeed Capello in the long term and the FA confirmed a short-list will be drawn up tomorrow.

There have been calls to avoid appointing another foreign coach but Bernstein said the new man won't definitely be British. He stated the FA had a preference for a British candidate but insisted the priority is to appoint the best person.

While you can't blame the FA for keeping all of its options open, choosing a British manager is the best option by far. It makes the boss a lot more relatable to the fans because he understands exactly how important every match can be to them.

That's why Redknapp is a perfect choice. He's not only English, but he has experience both as a player and a manager, so there isn't a situation he hasn't witnessed during his nearly five decades around the sport.

Having led Tottenham since 2008, he is under pressure to contend for a Premier League title each and every season. He's handled it well, which shows there wouldn't be any issues making the transition to the England job.

The 64-year-old former midfielder hasn't made any comments about the potential of taking over because the situation just arose and his own off-field issues, but when your country's team comes calling it's always difficult to say no.

What would make his a successful international manager is his willingness to change. Many bosses like working out of one formation and force players into it regardless of whether or not it's the best fit for them. That frequently leads to disappointing results and aggravated players.

Redknapp is completely different. He tends to roll with the punches and is wiling to change things on the fly if that's best for his team.

Since international rosters are always changing, that trait will come in handy for him. He won't be too emotionally connected to any one player or formation.

It's not the best time to be going through manager turmoil with Euro 2012 right around the corner, but the FA has to deal with the hand it has been dealt.

The team hasn't lived up to expectations at major events over the past handful of years, so perhaps a new outlook is exactly what it needs moving forward. There's simply too much talent to choose from for England not to be an international powerhouse.

Redknapp is the right man to make sure that happens sooner rather than later.
