World Football's 15 Most Believable Summer Transfer Rumours so Far
Transfer rumors rarely come off as believable. Here's proof that the phenomenon exists.
With four months to go until the summer transfer window opens, it's hard to know which rumors to believe and which to dismiss. But if you look closely enough, there are plenty of rumors out there that make a lot of sense.
Here are 15 of them. We don't just think these rumors are believable; we think each of them actually have a decent chance of happening.
What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
Eden Hazard Is Going Somewhere
1 of 15Lille's Belgian winger Eden Hazard has made it clear he wants a summer transfer.
We don't know where he'll end up—most of the recent buzz has involved Arsenal—but Hazard is definitely leaving Lille.
Willian to Chelsea
2 of 15Just a warning: Chelsea will appear on this list often. That's probably because they figure to be busy this summer.
One of the Blues' targets appears to be Willian of Shakhtar Donetsk. Chelsea reportedly lodged a winter bid, and now the rumor mill is pointing toward a summer move.
Edinson Cavani to Chelsea
3 of 15Uruguayan international Edinson Cavani was reportedly another winter transfer target for Chelsea, but the striker stayed with Napoli.
That could change in the summer. The rumor mill has already started to churn out stories linking the two parties.
And while a winter move didn't make perfect sense—Cavani was cup-tied to Napoli—a summer deal seems likely, especially with Chelsea's cash.
Kevin De Bruyne to Go Back out on Loan, Again
4 of 15This is the last Chelsea-related slide. Honest.
Chelsea signed 20-year-old Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne from Genk this winter—and promptly sent him right back to the same club on loan. Villas-Boas quickly distanced himself from the signing, and now De Bruyne is reportedly saying he expects to spend the 2012-13 season on loan as well.
Considering that Villas-Boas didn't seem to want De Bruyne at all, another loan seems likely.
Balotelli Back to Italy
5 of 15Controversy has dogged Italian forward Mario Balotelli since he joined Manchester City in the summer of 2010.
Now he's being linked with a return to his homeland. We don't see why he wouldn't consider it.
United, City Battling for Gaitan
6 of 15Nicolas Gaitan is one of the top players for a Benfica team that has turned heads this season in Europe. In addition to topping a Champions League group that also included Manchester United, Benfica lead Porto by five points atop the Portuguese table.
Not surprisingly, Gaitan's performances have led to several breathless reports in the rumor mill. According to multiple reports, both Manchester United and Manchester City are interested in signing the midfielder.
The Manchester United part makes a lot of sense. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson got to see Gaitan up close twice this season in matches.
And because City are United's biggest rivals (and because they need midfielder help and have tons of money) , their interest would also make sense.
Park Chu-Young to Leave Arsenal
7 of 15South Korean forward Park Chu-Young has reportedly threatened to leave Arsenal this summer if he doesn't get more playing time.
Stop laughing, Arsenal fans. Just let Park vent. He's only played a few times this season.
OK, done?
Since Park almost certainly won't be getting more playing time between now and the end of the season (Arsene Wenger has been selecting the 34-year-old version of Thierry Henry ahead of him), it's hard to see Park sticking around.
That is, if he isn't bluffing.
Permanent Deal for Adebayor
8 of 15Multiple reports have suggested that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in making their loan deal for Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor permanent.
Most people probably don't even remember that Adebayor, who is technically still a Manchester City player, is currently on loan. The confusion will probably end this summer.
Aquilani to AC Milan, For Good
9 of 15The same goes for AC Milan and Alberto Aquilani, who is still technically a Liverpool player. But on this one, a permanent deal seems even more inevitable.
In fact, Aquilani's agent has reportedly called it a "formality."
Christopher Samba to Anywhere
10 of 15Christopher Samba apparently wants to become the new Carlos Tevez. The Congolese defender has been saying some nasty things about his employers, and now he's reportedly refusing to train.
When a rumor comes up regarding Samba's exit from Ewood Park, we'll probably believe it.
Coyle Planning Clear-out
11 of 15According to Mirror Football, Bolton manager Owen Coyle wants to clear some space on his roster. The potential spring cleaning would include midfielder Sean Davis, forward Robbie Blake and fullback Paul Robinson.
That sounds about right. Bolton currently sit 18th in the Premier League table and are in danger of being relegated at the end of the season. Someone has to be held responsible. If it's not Davis, Blake and Robinson, it'll be somebody.
Thiago Silva to Barcelona
12 of 15According to reports out of Spain, Barcelona are planning a summer bid for AC Milan's Brazilian defender Thiago Silva.
Thiago Silva, 27, has played for Milan since 2009. He might be ready for a new challenge.
And besides, Barcelona tend to (eventually) get what they want in the transfer market.
Pato to PSG
13 of 15Another AC Milan player who could be on the move is Alexandre Pato. The Brazilian forward was linked with a move to PSG this winter, but a deal never materialized.
Now the rumors are back, and Kaká has been thrown in the mix. With all the money flowing into PSG these days, neither deal seems out of the question.
Krasic to England
14 of 15It almost happened in January. This summer, Milos Krasic will probably move to England.
Why? He's being linked with a bunch of English teams. And he reportedly turned down a move to Russia (we don't blame him for that one).
Usami out of Bayern
15 of 15Takashi Usami is finally admitting the inevitable. He's going to have to leave Bayern Munich.
A while back, the Japanese international didn't want to acknowledge reality, claiming he was "bewildered" by the rumors linking him with a move away from the Bavarian club.
More recently, though, his lack of first-team opportunities seemed to sway him.
