NFL Draft Preview: 5 Teams That Could Pick Up QB Kellen Moore
With the season now over, the NFL looks to April's draft as the next big event. Many big names are coming out this year, and people have been buzzing for quite some time now about who they think will end up where.
These big names include Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, Baylor's Heisman trophy winning quarterback Robert Griffin III and Alabama running back Trent Richardson.
One person who most do not think of, though, is Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore. With players like Luck and Griffin III out on the market, people are putting Moore aside.
However, I do not think that Moore should be so easily overlooked. He had 3,800 yards and 43 touchdowns with only nine interceptions last year, leading Boise to a 12-1 record.
This adds on to Moore's amazing career numbers of 14,667 passing yards, 142 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. Not too bad.
I know that Moore is not coming out of a great team in Boise State; he is not the tallest quarterback nor does he have the greatest arm strength. But with the large amount of teams who need a quarterback in this year's draft, he might be the sleeper pick that teams will look for in the later rounds.
Here are five teams that I think could snag Moore in the draft and for whom Moore would be a good fit.
Washington Redskins
1 of 5The Washington Redskins are one of the first teams that come to mind when it comes to quarterback help, and Kellen Moore would be a great fit.
Right now, the Redskins' quarterback depth chart reads Rex Grossman and John Beck. Yikes.
Rex Grossman is no spring chicken at the age of 31, and he did not prove to be a very successful quarterback this year. With four more interceptions (20) than touchdowns (16), he was not what the Redskins had expected.
The alternative to him would be John Beck, better known as "Who?". At the age of 30 he only has three career touchdowns with 1,417 yards.
Beck is inexperienced and Grossman is ineffective. The Redskins need someone to step in and fill the void at quarterback moving forward.
They won't be able to pick up a Luck or Griffin III, but Moore might be available and they should take him. Grossman could mentor Moore and teach him the ins and outs of the game. In fact, Coach Shanahan could even give him the opportunity to start in the middle of next season if the Redskins go south in the tough NFC East.
Dallas Cowboys
2 of 5You might be surprised to see the Dallas Cowboys on this list, but hear me out. The Cowboys are going to need to pick up a backup quarterback.
They might have a plethora, but none of them are really all that impressive. And quite frankly, it will only be a matter of time before Tony Romo is gone.
You might be asking yourself how a guy with a 102.5 quarterback rating and over 4,000 yards and 31 touchdowns could be on his way out. The answer: his inability to come through in the clutch.
Yes, Romo had the best passer rating in the fourth quarter this season, but how many games were blown as a result of him? A quarterback could have a fantastic passer rating but still not win a game; for Romo, this is the case.
Ever since he botched the snap of the extra point that would have sent the Cowboys to the Super Bowl over the Seattle Seahawks, Romo has not been the same. I believe this is because this memory haunts him and he is unable to get over that hump, making him choke when it comes to crunch time.
The Cowboys will not deal with not making the playoffs, and if it is because of Romo he will be out. If Romo is gone, who is going to replace him? Jon Kitna? I don't think so.
The Cowboys could pick up Moore so that Romo could coach him and develop him to take his place in the future.
Miami Dolphins
3 of 5No, the Dolphins are not just on this list because having two Moores on a team together would be funny. I think that the Dolphins really could use a quarterback like Kellen Moore and they could acquire him in the draft if their offseason doesn't go as some say it will.
Matt Moore filled in nicely for Chad Henne this year. He did a good job, but not a great job.
Will the Dolphins be doomed if Matt Moore is their starter next season? No. In fact they might be able to put together a winning record. However, in the very stacked AFC East, good will not be good enough.
I think that Kellen Moore would be a great fit for the Dolphins' offensive scheme. Miami likes to run a lot, and Moore has been criticized for his lack of arm strength.
In the Dolphins' offense, Kellen Moore will be able to work to his strengths and pass the ball short with a running game led by Reggie Bush. He won't have to pull off huge throws unless he desperately needed too.
Matt Moore could come out and play great this year, but what if he doesn't? Of the four quarterbacks the Dolphins have on the roster, none of them are good backups if Matt Moore does not work out.
If the Dolphins draft Kellen Moore, they will have a decent backup who can mature on the bench while Matt Moore starts the season. There, he will be able to pick up some skills and be ready to lead the team if Matt Moore collapses for the rest of the season.
Oakland Raiders
4 of 5The Raiders have an injury-prone quarterback in Jason Campbell and an ineffective, aging one in Carson Palmer. They need a backup.
If Campbell gets injured, Palmer will have to take the team over once again, and that did not turn out too well for the Raiders as they missed the playoffs after looking extremely hot in the beginning of the season. Not only that, but Palmer is injury prone too.
The Raiders have an excellent running game and a solid defense. It seems that the only thing they are missing is a healthy quarterback.
Kellen Moore would be a great fit for the Raiders. A team that will be run-heavy on offense only needs a young quarterback that is accurate and can complete passes.
Moore has the capability to do that, and with the big names going early, the Raiders could steal Moore later on in the draft and score big.
New York Jets
5 of 5Last, but certainly not least, the New York Jets. The Jets could use Kellen Moore, because anything is better than Mark Sanchez.
Sanchez got the freshman bye. He even got the sophomore bye. But it is his third season in the league now, and he has not shown any signs of major improvement.
Pressure gets him rattled and he makes bad decisions. It looks like he cannot throw the ball more than 20 yards down the field accurately. There is not much good that can be said about the former USC quarterback.
Head coach Rex Ryan has promised a Super Bowl since the year he arrived in New York, and he has yet to deliver. I believe that the main reason for this is Mark Sanchez.
Sanchez does not have the skills to bring his team to the Super Bowl, and this year it got even worse. It even appears that he does not have enough leadership qualities to control his team and the problems that arise between players.
The Jets are a mess and something needs to change. Mark Sanchez had his chance; his time should be up. It is time for a new face to emerge and try to take control of this team.
I don't think the Jets will be acquiring Peyton Manning anytime soon, and there are not many good quarterbacks on the free-agent market. So why not try their luck with Moore?
The Jets could acquire Moore and not have to give up draft picks to do so, like they did for the bust that is Sanchez. They can pick him up in the late rounds, and will be pleasantly surprised with how well he could fit into their offense.
