NHL Trade Rumors: Teams with Best Assets to Deal

Donald WoodFeb 6, 2012

With the NHL season flying past, there are plenty of teams looking to make trades. For the buyers to get what they want, the sellers need to be moving the product.

With some teams filled with unrestricted free agents or falling out of playoff contention, it will be time to start trying to move the players that organizations don’t feel they will bring back the next season.

All of the following teams have the assets to make a huge deal happen or even just pick up that final piece of the puzzle.

Philadelphia Flyers

With an influx of young talent this offseason from the Jeff Carter and Mike Richards trades, the Philadelphia Flyers have depth and future at almost every positionthey are thin on defense.

The nice mix of veterans and young players makes their team a gold mine for making deals. With the plethora of talent they have all over the ice, they could get almost any player in the NHL if they were willing to part with any player on their team.

That much power will be a great tool for a team that has been hit hard by the injury bug and may be looking to add pieces as the deadline approaches.

Los Angeles Kings

The Los Angeles Kings have been known to do business without restricting themselves with no-trade or no-movement clauses, and that helps them if they need to make a move at the deadline.

With role players like Jarret Stoll and Dustin Penner both heading into their last season before unrestricted free agency, the Kings would be smart to move the duo before the deadline.

The Kings sit in seventh in the Western Conference and may be looking to shake their team up in hopes of making an extended run towards the Stanley Cup.

Calgary Flames

If the Calgary Flames have a plethora of anything, it’s over-the-hill forwards and defenders that could be key pieces in a trade.

With Calgary falling farther and farther out of contention, it will be a matter of time before they become sellers at the deadline and start moving some of the older stars.

The first name people will think of will be Jarome Iginla, but players more likely to be traded would be forward Lee Stempniak or defender Scott Hannan. Both of those players have no clauses in their contracts as opposed to almost everyone else on the Flames.
