NBA Rumors: Steve Nash Shouldn't Finish Season with Phoenix Suns
Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns are in a very interesting predicament right now. He is 37 years old, in the final year of his contract and desperately wants to win a title. The team is not going to make the playoffs, and needs to start rebuilding by trading away all its older, valuable assets.
According to Ken Berger of CBS Sports, there is resistance from both sides to include Nash in any potential trade that the Suns might make.
"Despite the Suns' struggles, Steve Nash has yet to express an interest in being traded, league sources said. But the organization will try to accommodate Nash's wishes if the 37-year-old foundation of the franchise decides he'd like a chance to compete for a championship with a contender. "It's really on him in terms of what he wants to do or not do," a person with knowledge of the situation said. Nash, who turns 38 next week, will be an unrestricted free agent July 1.
"
It is always a hard sell to the fans when you trade a player as popular as Nash, but you can't let that cloud your judgement.
There comes a time when a franchise has to face facts and move on to the next phase. There would be no reason for the Suns to re-sign Nash after the season, so they are going to lose him for nothing at the end of the year.
Logically speaking, there is nothing that the Suns stand to gain by keeping Nash. He is still a great player, but there is no one around him that makes you think things are going to get better soon.
The way that the Suns value Nash, their initial asking price could be sky high with no teams willing to pay it. But by the time the trade deadline approaches on March 15, there will be a sense of desperation for them to get something done.
All of this appears to be moot right now because both sides still feel loyal to each other, but there has to be a time over the next 38 days when a light bulb goes off in the head of either Nash or the Suns to realize that a divorce is in the best interest of both parties.
Nash needs to get away from Phoenix if he wants to win a title. The Suns need to take charge of their future instead of worrying about the present.
