Super Bowl 2012: Tom Brady Will Cement Legacy with Win in Indianapolis

Brian MaziqueFeb 5, 2012

Tom Brady doesn't have to throw another pass to go to the Hall of Fame, but another Super Bowl win makes him the greatest QB in history.

I know that is a bold statement, but Tom Brady has had a historic career and he's a healthy 34 years old. He will already have accomplished so much with feasibly four years remaining at a high level of play. There is no telling what else he'd add on to his list of accomplishments.

Generally, QBs are evaluated in a few categories, but most importantly, they are judged by wins and Super Bowl rings. Brady's QB Record is a stellar 124-35 in the regular season, 16-5 in the playoffs and 3-1 in Super Bowls.

Here is how that compares to two other great QBs whose names are most often mentioned when the G.O.A.T conversation comes up:

John Elway QB Record, 148-82 in regular season, 14-8 in the playoffs and 2-3 in Super Bowls

Joe Montana QB Record, 117-47 in regular season, 16-7 in the playoffs and 4-0 in Super Bowls

Brady is superior to these two all-time greats in every category except Montana in Super Bowl victories, but he would equal his total with a win in Indy tomorrow.

Brady has done it without the major names on offense like Terrell Davis, Jerry Rice, Roger Craig, John Taylor and Shannon Sharpe.

Of Brady's long standing teammates at RB, WR or TE, only Wes Welker has a shot at going to the Hall of Fame. It's too early to predict how long Rob Gronkowski will play at the level he played this season, so he can't go in that category for now and Randy Moss only played with Brady for two-and-a-half years.

Brady has done much of what he's accomplished with a less than stellar offensive supporting cast.

It continues in that same vein this year. Without a dominating defense and a notable running game, the Pats were 13-3 and they are playing in the Super Bowl.

In raw numbers Brady holds his own as well. He has 39,979 yards passing now, if he averages a very attainable 4,000 yards passing per season for the next three years, he'll be near 56,000 for his career. That will likely make him top five all-time in passing yards.

He is already fifth all-time in TD passes with an even 300. That number will get even more gaudy as the years go by.

While Eli Manning can establish himself as one of the great QBs in history with a win, Brady stands to become the greatest with a win.
