Patriots vs. Giants: Which Trash-Talkers Will Eat Their Words?

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

The Super Bowl just doesn't seem complete without some ol' fashioned trash-talking.

Headed into Super Bowl XLVI between the New England Patriots and New York Giants, there's been no shortage of that.

This is, after all, a grudge match for the Patriots, whose undefeated season went up in flames four seasons ago as they were squashed by Eli Manning and the Giants, 17-14.

Here is how I see each trash-talker faring in Super Bowl XLVI.

Tom Brady

Never mind that Tom Brady was speaking in front of 25,000 Patriots fans at a pep rally. When he confidently said he hoped to have "a lot more people at our party next weekend," it caused a fuss, particularly in New York, per the Washington Post.

You may remember that Brady scoffed at a prediction that claimed the Patriots would score 17 points in Super Bowl XLII against the Giants. Um...yeah...that didn't work out too well for him.

Well, Brady faces the same problem this season: a dominant Giants pass rush consisting of Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora.

History has a way of repeating itself.

Osi Umenyiora vs. Matt Light

Here's a recent exchange between Umenyiora and Light, via USA Today:

"

Umenyiora: "He just does all that extra pushing and tries to hit you over the pile, and stuff like that. At the end of the day, I'm not paying any attention to that, anymore."

Light: "Can you have an individual rivalry? I thought rivalries were between teams, in general."

Umenyiora: "No more messages. I will see him on Sunday, and that is pretty much about it."

Light: "It's football, not tennis, so I'm sure it will be entertaining."

"

Getting a little chippy, are we? And I thought you guys would be friends come Sunday.

This is a tough matchup to call. On one hand, Light is one of the best offensive tackles in football. On the other hand, Umenyiora had nine sacks in nine games during the regular season and leads the Giants with 3.5 sacks during the playoffs.

However, I actually think Tuck will have the bigger game come Sunday, given he will be matched up with rookie tackle Nate Solder. The Patriots unit as a whole has allowed just one sack this postseason.

David Baas vs. Vince Wilfork

When Giants center David Baas was asked about Vince Wilfork, he apparently had heard enough already, per the New York Post: "We deserve to be here, too. We busted our butts to be here, just like they did. We’re no slouches!”

Whoa buddy, calm down.

Baas will play an underrated role for the Giants against the Patriots—he gets the pleasure of facing Wilfork, who not only is a force against the run but also leads the Patriots with 2.5 sacks in the playoffs.

With all due respect to Baas, Wilfork is a four-time Pro Bowler and Baas is battling nagging injuries. Something tells me Wilfork will win this battle.

And for all of you wondering, no, Brandon Jacobs hasn't talked trash...yet.
