Mayweather vs. Cotto Will Be an Impossible Bout to Sell to Fans
Floyd Mayweather Jr. will fight Miguel Cotto on May 5th, and the boxing world will continue to shrug and yawn well after the bout is over.
ESPN reported the Las Vegas showdown after the Nevada State Athletic Commission voted to allow Floyd Mayweather a one-fight license.
That makes his May 5th fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas against junior middleweight titleholder Miguel Cotto a go. This should be a grandiose affair that every last sports fan could get behind, but it's not, and here is why:
Not Fight We Want
The obvious point is that we all want Manny Pacquiao to be the man in the ring with Money May during a Cinco de Mayo showdown.
Instead, Bob Arum has his fighter looking in a much different direction, and the reason is undoubtedly money-based. Not that any of that matters.
Pac-Man vs. Money May would have been epic a couple years ago, but now we have two fighters that are inching past their prime fighting days. Boxing has already lost out on what could have been the best fight ever.
Day Late Dollar Short
To that point, this very fight is past due as well. I would have loved to see Mayweather go up in weight and fight Cotto, but a couple of years ago.
Like most fan-friendly fighters, these guys are past their primes. Now before you get all up in arms, I will state that their second-best is by far better than any game in town.
But imagine the marathon melee we saw from Cotto and Pacquiao in 2009 and you can see where we are going. This would have been an explosive bout from start to finish.
Money May Trumps With Talent
All that being said, Mayweather still wins this handily. It hearkens back to our first point in that Pacquiao is the only true foil to Money May.
Forget that he is going up in weight; Mayweather will destroy Cotto like he does everyone else. He will be patient with amazing defense, and get his shots in when they count.
He is a cold and calculating boxer that only has one equal, and that's Pacquiao. If you want to see how patient Mayweather can be at 154 pounds, take a gander at the 2007 fight he had with Oscar De La Hoya.
We are in store for one hell of a lackluster fight, but that is just par for the course in boxing.
