January Transfer Window: 6 Worst Deals in the EPL

Nathan JudahJun 7, 2018

So we've all had chance to calm down and take stock after the frantic last 24 hours of the January transfer window.

Yet again, clubs who had 30 whole days to buy players and agree to personal terms were left cramming their business into the last 25 minutes, causing chaos throughout the Premier League.

The result this time around? Some very unusual transfers that will bemuse even the most seasoned fans and analysts alike.

Here are the six worst deals that took place in the month of January.

6. Sotirios Kyrgiakos : Wolfsberg to Sunderland (Loan)

1 of 6

Martin O'Neil has done many good things since taking over from the hapless Steve Bruce in November— this is not one of them.

Kyrgiakos is a proven Premier League misfit who struggled to make any kind of an impact at Liverpool, resulting in a transfer to Wolfsburg less than two seasons later.

Bought to replace Sami Hyypia, the Greek defender spent more time on the bench than he did on the pitch.

More known for his ponytail than his football, the 32-year-old is not going to make an impact on Wearside unless he changes his hairstyle.

A very puzzling move.

5. Ryan Nelson: Blackburn to Spurs

2 of 6

A very dependable defender in his prime, the New Zealand international has been a fine servant to Blackburn over the years.

But after a string of injuries, it was widely expected that the 34-year-old was headed to the MLS to take up a player coach role at an unnamed club.

Instead, he is signed by Harry Redknapp to help keep Tottenham's title challenge alive?

Nelson has only made one appearance this season with Blackburn claiming he is not fit to play any football in his present state.

Definitely a strange one!

4. Louis Saha: Everton to Spurs

3 of 6

Another one for Spurs fans to scratch their heads about—Louis Saha?

The forgotten man at Everton, Saha has become a shadow of his former self during the last two seasons as a string of injuries over the years seem to have taken their toll.

Surely bought to strengthen the squad rather than command a regular starting spot, Saha will have to improve his goal ratio remarkably after only netting once in 18 games so far this season.

At 33, the striker is not getting any younger and again, doesn't fit the Spurs recent recruitment drive.

Another strange one.

3. Djibril Cisse: Lazio to QPR

4 of 6

I hear you saying, "What? He scored on his debut! It's a fantastic signing!" Please judge this purchase at the end of the season.

This is Cisse's fifth club and third Premier League club in just six seasons—that says a lot about a temperamental striker who can be sensational and diabolical all in the same game.

Cisse is not renowned for his team play, something that QPR will be desperate for if they are to stay in the league.

QPR went 2-0 up at Aston Villa on Wednesday night but ultimately only came out with a point. When the real fight starts in a few weeks, let's see whether Cisse is standing up and being counted.

I think not.

2. Nica Jelavic: Rangers to Everton

5 of 6

Question: How many times has a striker come into the Premier League after scoring goals for fun in the SPL and succeeded?

Answer: Never!

OK, I get it, David Moyes is Scottish, he sees something different in Jelavic that could make him a huge star in England.

I say, look at the history. This is a quite crazy signing that will fail spectacularly and could well result in the Croatian returning to Scotland before he has even filled his locker in Merseyside.

What's even more astonishing is the transfer is believed to be over $5 million. That's a huge gamble on an unproven player for a team like Everton who have continually struggled to make an impact in the transfer market.

Could be an epic fail.

1. Pavel Pogrebnyak: Stuttgart to Fulham

6 of 6

How do you anger already disgruntled fans? Sell your best player on deadline day and replace him with a guy who no one has heard of and a surname no one can pronounce—introducing Pavel Pogrebnyak.

Martin Jol has really done it this time and with Clint Dempsey almost single-handedly keeping Fulham competitive at the moment, the pressure is going to immediately be on the Russian international to produce.

Unfortunately, the signs do not look good. 15 goals in 68 appearances for Stuttgart is hardly prolific and his record at Zenit St Petersburg wasn't much better.

If they don't improve their faltering league form, the Cottager's could find themselves being sucked into a relegation battle come the end of the season.

Russian roulette might not have been the best game to choose.

Any other suggestions? Let me know.
