Stefon Diggs Visiting Maryland: What Are the Odds He Stays In-State?
We saw this happen before when almost nobody believed it would. Dorial Green-Beckham decided to throw away offers from Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma and instead attend his home school, the Missouri Tigers.
Is there really any way Stefon Diggs would do the same thing for Maryland?
Diggs is one of the top athletes in this year's recruiting class. His 6'0", 185-pound frame isn't exactly the biggest in the world, but the kid can flat out fly. He's a playmaker on the football field and a threat to take it the distance every time the ball is in his hands. He's a receiver who can stretch the field for you and even provide a spark on special teams as well.
Much like Green-Beckam, Diggs has offers from nearly every school in the country. Programs like Florida State, Miami, Michigan, USC and Ohio State have all put an offer on the table for the young man. He's visited Auburn, California, Florida and the Buckeyes already.
His next and final visit will be his home school, the Maryland Terrapins. Before we completely rule out this team, they do have a few things going for them.
First, Maryland does have the home-field advantage. Anytime your school is only a 30-minute car ride away from home, you have something that the other schools don't. We've seen many times where kids want to be closer to home so their friends and family can come and enjoy their games.
In this case, it doesn't get much closer than that.
Another thing to look at is that Maryland has had success with wide receivers. Just look at Darrius Heyward-Bey or even Torrey Smith, both of whom are successful wide receivers in the NFL today.
Diggs would also get the opportunity to contribute right away with the top five receivers on this team a year ago either graduating or set to become seniors next season. This will be his team as early as next year and that's something you can't really say about any of the other schools he's considering.
Randy Edsall is not a bad head coach at all; you've seen the success he had with the Connecticut Huskies. Just imagine what he could do with a player as talented as Diggs on his roster.
And it's not like the ACC is a bad conference, either. He'd still have the opportunity to compete for BCS bowls and conference championships.
So, what are the chances he ends up with Maryland? Who knows? I still consider Auburn and Florida the favorites in this race, but as you can see, the Terrapins do have their advantages. Diggs has been one of the most difficult players to get a hint from and he's keeping everything close to the vest.
Here are a few things his high school head coach said about this process.
"His head is spinning," coach Bob Milloy said in a phone interview. "I don't think he has any idea where he wants to go. All I ask him is, ‘How was your weekend?' And he replies, ‘How could it not be good with the entire campus falling all over you?'"
I do know that Maryland has his attention enough for him to make an official visit. Although I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were a Maryland fan, I also wouldn't be surprised if he was suiting up in uniforms like this next season.
