Super Bowl Over-Under: 3 Telltale Signs to Take the Over

Jeff ChaseJun 7, 2018

This year's Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants is going to be between quarterbacks Tom Brady and Eli Manning, two of this season's best passers. With the chance that this game will be a shootout, one would be wise to take the over in this matchup.

According to Covers.com, the current over/under for this game is 54 points.

That is quite a lot of points, but these two teams are known to score a lot, and that is what they will likely do this Sunday.

When it comes to taking the either the over or the under, that is one's choice, but here are signs that the over is the best one:

1. Both Teams Give Up A Lot of Yards

While the Giants have been playing some relatively solid defense all season long, and especially this postseason, neither team has really been that strong at stopping the pass.

Neither of these teams are really about the run, but both focus on getting things done through the air. While that isn't good for the defenses, this game looks to be a huge one for both quarterbacks.

The Patriots are allowing 293.9 yards per game through the air. With a quarterback like Manning having three strong options in Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Mario Manningham, it is going to be a difficult task for the Patriots to stop.

Same thing goes for the Giants, though, as they will have to stop Brady with his weapons in Rob Gronkowski, Deion Branch, Wes Welker and Anthony Hernandez.

Both teams have electrifying offenses which could really go off and score huge at any moment.

2. The Giants' Game Against the Packers

While these two teams did play against each other back in Week 9, a better example of how this game could go is comparing it to the Packers game.

Both the Packers and Patriots are similar in the fact that they run through an elite quarterback that has essentially no running game.

The Giants beat the Packers 37-20, and while I am not saying that the Giants will win this game in that fashion, one can assume that this game could likely be just as high scoring.

The Patriots have very similar options to the Packers, including the fact that they have a few x-factors that could go off at any time.

Neither the Packers or the Patriots had a very strong pass defense, so the Giants could have a very similar outcome.

3. They Outplayed Strong Pass Defenses in Their Previous Matchups

Last round, the Patriots had to defeat the Baltimore Ravens to reach the Super Bowl. The Ravens' pass defense is very strong, and the Patriots had a hard time getting past them.

Brady still did the most that he could, and he was able to throw for 239 yards. He did have two interceptions, but this Giants' pass defense isn't as strong.

The Giants, on the other hand, were going against the San Francisco 49ers, who also have one of the best pass defenses in the league.

Manning was able to throw for 316 yards with two touchdowns. He will likely have a big relief against this Patriots' defense, and will find many more opportunities to score.

It will remain to be seen, though, how they handle each other, but their past games do point to this one being a high scoring game.
