Eddie Goldman: 5-Star DT Won't Have Impact at Florida State in Freshman Year
The Florida State Seminoles enjoyed quite the successful Signing Day, as they secured commitments from five-star Eddie Goldman and four-stars Ronald Darby, Colin Blake, and Reggie Northup.
But they may have to wait a little bit before Goldman really makes his impact.
The big kid from Washington DC, who joins defensive lineman Mario Edwards as a menacing five-star duo, is a fantastic talent. He is rated as the seventh-best overall prospect by Rivals and as the 10th-best by ESPN.
So how could there possibly be any chance he doesn't contribute right away?
The Seminoles are just too deep. Last year, FSU allowed just 2.5 yards per carry (second-best in the entire country) and sacked the quarterback 8.75 percent of the time (seventh best).
Essentially, they had one of the most intimidating defensive lines in the country, and everyone is returning.
Timmy Jernigan, Everett Dawkins, Brandon Jenkins, Bjoern Werner and more are all coming back. With Goldman, the rich are getting richer. The Seminoles are getting Seminol-ier.
The playing time will clearly be sparse. Can Goldman crack the rotation?
According to ESPN's scouting report, Goldman's talents seem a little limited.
""His explosive nature will allow him to get penetration and be a disruptive at times, but he will really contribute best as a stout player who can draw blockers and hold his ground. He has the size and ability to take on blockers and hold his ground and can defend a gap and help those around him to make plays."
"
Essentially, he's going to be there to fill holes. He'll stop the run game, where FSU already ranks No. 2, but he won't get a ton of pressure on the quarterback.
His skills are very valuable, and he'll add depth, but that won't get him a ton of recognition this year. As Goldman gets older, he'll add more of a pass-rush, and his five stars will really show.
But for now, he'll fly under the radar. And that's not a bad thing.
