ESPNU 150 2012: Missouri and Teams Edging Toward Breakout Year

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

Several teams got lucky on National Signing Day, nabbing some of the best recruits in the country.

For programs coming off disappointing seasons, landing a great recruiting class was critical. We've seen how a few big-time recruits can boost a program substantially.

Here's a look at some teams poised for breakout seasons after grabbing some recruits who are going to be hard to keep off the field in their first seasons.

3. Missouri

Missouri doesn't have a Top-25 class overall, but landing top receiver Dorial Green-Beckham may make up for all of that.

Green-Beckham, with his combination of strength, athleticism, speed, hands, length, determination and hand-eye coordination, is a scary recruit who will work wonders for the Tigers' offense.

Opposite receiver T.J. Moe, Green-Beckham projects as a playmaker right away, and you can bet Missouri guaranteed him playing time. Combined with a rushing attack that ranked ninth in the nation last season, and evolving dual-threat quarterback James Franklin, Missouri has a lot to be hopeful for next season.

2. Texas

The Longhorns are coming off an 8-5 campaign, but we all know that's not big enough for Texas.

In response, head coach Mack Brown has landed the third-best recruiting class in the nation, according to ESPNU.

There still may be questions about Texas' quarterback situation, but the school helped its ground attack with the No. 1 running back in the 2012 class, hometown product Johnathan Gray. Combined with 2011 five-star recruit Malcolm Brown, Texas' rushing attack figures to be hard to stop.

As for the defense, Texas landed the second-best defensive tackle in the class, Malcom Brown. He's an explosive, quick, 300-pound force who has the potential to develop into a superstar.

1. Florida State

Florida State went bonkers this offseason, signing two Top-10 defensive linemen in No. 1 Mario Edwards and No. 10 Eddie Goldman.

The top quarterback recruit in the country, Jameis Winston, has also committed to FSU.

You add in defensive end Chris Casher and cornerback Ronald Darby, and you have a fearsome incoming class that could blow the lid off the ACC.

Last season, Florida State gave up just 15.1 points per game, fourth in the nation. The Seminoles also averaged 30.9 points per game, guided by the developing E.J. Manuel at quarterback.

Edwards and Goldman have the potential to step in right away and make a difference, while Winston applies pressure on Manuel, who threw eight interceptions in his first seven games last season.
