Stefon Diggs: Assessing 5-Star WR's Top Options
Wednesday is national signing day, but don't expect to hear Stefon Diggs announce his decision at any point throughout the course of the day.
Diggs, a 5-star wide receiver out of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland, revealed last week that he will announce his decision on Feb. 10. He's in no hurry, and he certainly needs the additional time to weigh his options.
Rivals.com compares Diggs to former Cal and current NFL star DeSean Jackson, so it's not surprising at all that he has been recruited by numerous schools over the months. He's down to a couple finalists, though, and now is as good a time as ever to take a look at how they stack up.
Auburn
Per Rivals, Diggs made an official visit to Auburn on Jan. 13. At the time, he said it was "probably my best visit yet."
Auburn could use a recruit like Diggs. It's been a slow recruiting season for Gene Chizik and his staff, which is thanks largely to the fact that Chizik had to fill out his staff this offseason, hiring a new offensive coordinator and a new defensive coordinator.
The recruits Auburn does have are a pretty good, however, so Diggs would be looking at a bright future if he did pick Auburn. At the same time, he would know that Auburn's 2012 class isn't quite up to par with the rest of the SEC West. That might influence his decision.
California
Diggs made his official visit to Cal way back in early December, but things have gotten pretty hectic since then.
Tosh Lupoi, one of the best recruiters in the country, left Cal in January to take a job at Washington. Cal's recruiting class immediately started to crumble, a reality that was highlighted by Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated.
Diggs has to know this as well as anyone. Going to Cal would be a roll of the dice.
Florida
Diggs visited Florida back on Jan. 20, which if nothing else means the Gators are fresh in his mind.
In addition, it can't be overlooked just how strong Florida's recruiting class is. Will Muschamp has had a very good recruiting season, as his 2012 class is really not that far behind Alabama's. If things pan out, SEC supremacy could be in Florida's future.
Offense has been a problem for the Gators in the last couple seasons, so getting a receiver like Diggs would be huge.
Maryland
According to MaxPreps.com, Diggs is going to visit Maryland this coming weekend.
Don't underestimate how this trip could influence Diggs' decision. We just saw Dorial Green-Beckham commit to Missouri, and it just so happens Missouri was the last school he visited. The visit was fresh in his mind when he signed his letter of intent.
Diggs' decision could be similarly influenced, and it helps that Maryland is the home-state school in this race.
Ohio State
Diggs visited Columbus last Friday, and the word from Rivals was that he was very much impressed.
No shocker there. Urban Meyer has rounded up one of the best recruiting classes in the country since taking over at Ohio State in late November. To boot, going to Ohio State would mean playing with Braxton Miller, who Diggs said he had a "great conversation" with.
Make no mistake, Ohio State is a big player for Diggs' talents.
