National Signing Day 2012: Top Storylines to Watch for as Recruits Commit

Wes ODonnellFeb 1, 2012

National signing day will not disappoint for those high on drama.

Decisions from high-profile recruits Dorial Green-Beckham, Eddie Goldman and Andrus Peat will finally be made today.

The Alabama vs. Texas vs. Ohio State vs. Florida vs. Florida State battle will end today (for the most part, as a few highly touted recruits are waiting until after signing day).

And the hype machine for the 2012 seasons will begin almost immediately.

Here are the top storylines to watch for as the day unfolds.

Will Dorial Beckham-Green shock the nation?

Most believe the race for the nation's most high-profile recruit is neck and neck between Arkansas and Missouri. DBG will be able to step on the field and make an immediate impact for the Razorbacks, or he could choose to stay close to home with the Tigers.

Or he can shake up everything and pick one of the nation's powerhouse programs at Alabama, Texas or Oklahoma.

If DGB surprising winds up in Tuscaloosa or Austin it will deeply impact the final class rankings.

How many more players can Urban Meyer flip for the Buckeyes?

The new coach in Columbus hit the ground running since his hire at Ohio State and has been making rounds and flipping players like flapjacks on a griddle.

The two-time national championship-winning coach will certainly have momentum on his side going into today's race for signatures and it certainly wouldn't be surprising to see steal a few more recruits.

SEC battle royale

While Alabama stands on top of the recruiting world, Georgia, Auburn and Florida find themselves in steel cage match for many of the same recruits.

The Gators could walk away with arguably a top class when all is said and done, but the Bulldogs will be damned if they let it happen at their expense.

Auburn knows it has to close strong to keep up in the SEC West, and before the day is out these three programs will likely be home to somewhere between 15 to 20 recruits combined.

How the West was won

Stanford is on the verge of turning in one of the best offensive hauls in years. USC could close extremely strong or fall flat on its face. Washington has momentum it never expected since the hire of Tosh Lupoi, and Cal is falling apart because of the departure of Tosh Lupoi. Oregon and UCLA have some solid classes as well.

Which class will shine brightest when the dust settles out West, though?
